I got rear ended last week by an old lady on her phone and now I'm thinking about doing the rear 1M conversion earlier than planned. Only have parts for the rear at the moment or else I'd be looking to get the whole thing done. Using the Jay Meadows rear flares instead of OEM quarter panels. Went to a body shop near me that looked like they do this type of work and they quoted me $3k for installation and paint of the rear bumper, side skirts, and flares. Also included in the price is reclear of the my trunk but that shouldn't be more than a hundred or so.

Is 3k a fair price? Not looking for cheap work, but also not trying to get walked over.

Can't even find a body shop around me willing to fill/paint my X5M body panels let alone one who would be willing to cut and blend steel to fiberglass and paint it.

3k sounds reasonable though. I remember the labor on the original conversions being more like 4-5k for the rear.

That makes me appreciate the area I live in a little bit. I understand your pain though, when I lived in Indiana I couldn't find a muffler shop that would make me a custom setup. Got a fair bit of attitude when I asked too which was a little frustrating. Seemed like anything out of the norm was frowned upon there.

3k did seem like a fair number to me but I just wanted to make sure. I'm going to look and see if I can find a shop that's done the 1M conversion before so they know exactly what I want.

Yep. I even said just prep and paint and give back to me and they refuse or quote me >4K which is a gtfo were not interested price. Asking for install (it's all bolt on with standard attachments, literally exactly what they do day to day) was met with incredulity and annoyed looks "we don't do custom work here".

Lucky you!

Fairness here depends on just how OEM you're going. You've mentioned doing add-on flares instead of the OEM panels, which saves you a lot of money, but are you doing the full rear end swap, i.e. oem rear bumper/exhaust hanger, OE 1M exhaust, battery relocation, etc?

The front is really straightforward, but the rear is pretty complicated. If they're doing all of that, price is more than fair.

After a lot of delays the rear conversion has begun. I'm still waiting for the carbon front fenders to ship so this will be a slow process. The body shop can get the rest of the front parts much cheaper than I could online but I want to wait until I see how the rear turns out.

No updates on rear progress. It's the holidays so I don't mind waiting. Bought another project car a few weeks ago so it hasn't been too bad. Got the carbon fenders delivered. Plan is to have it painted the cars colour but leave some of the carbon exposed to have a sort of side vent effect similar to the black stickers that someone sells on the 1M forums.

Off eBay from seller based in Taiwan. Should be able to search carbon 1m fender and it'll pop up. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll post the link.

Looks real good. I haven't found a shop that is willing to do this for anything less than 5 figures and have been looking for a few years now. Pretty much gave up and am ending up just getting the original paint corrected and touched up instead.

Real shame cuz I would love to do this, but it seems like at least by me, no one is willing to take the task on

Not sure yet still waiting for front bumper. I saw a video of them on someone's car and there's gonna be areas that need correcting for sure.

I guess as a follow-up does anyone know any place on the East Coast that would be willing to do this for a decent price? Hahaha

Top edge isn't perfect but it's an improvement from some others I've seen. Overall satisfied with fitment. Only recently gotten the front parts.

Man what a bummer. I really wanted these fenders but that top edge would drive me nuts.

I think it's less noticeable when painted. Doesn't really bother me since my hood fitment is kinda shit also.
