BMW dealership and error 2A87

Ok so after I went to the Nurburgring I got an error code and this happens after I drive around for a long time (normal) and then WOT for a bit. Every time I turn off the engine and turn it back on it’s gone and out of limp mode. I looked up the code and got to this 2A87, searched it on the web and found out that “BMW advised to check for abnormal wear to the cam bearing ledge which would cause reduced oil pressure, a jammed VANOS”
So I took it to my BMW dealership they said they’ll look at it. So after like 5 hours they said it’s the catless dp that causes this error. Bla bla bla don’t beleave them, but what should I do?

Hey. Had the same code. You should try removing, cleaning, and swapping positions of the two vanos solenoids first. If that doesn't help, replace both with new solenoids. If that doesn't resolve the code then you probably need to have the bearing ledges looked at. For me the clean and swap didn't help, but after replacing the solenoids I've never had the code.

This is a common issue. blaming it on the catless down pipe is complete bs!

Solenoid Valves.... That fixed it for me...

Performed diagnostic fault survey and found a fault in the engine control unit(DME): 2A87 Exhaust vanos mechanism, not currently present, occurred 2 times.

Referenced SIB 11 02 08 and checked that the oil filter insert was installed.

Next step is to replace both vanos solenoids and change the oil and filter, clear faults and see if the fault returns. If the fault does return the exhaust cam will need to be removed and the cam ledgers inspected.

That's such a cop out by BMW, blame it on the mod even though they know fully that the DP could not cause this. It sounds like they never even bothered to investigate this for you or their tech is an idiot. The only reason I haven't gone with DPs is because of this because I know if my Turbo's rattle some day or a I have ANY engine problem they'll blame that just to get out of it...so frustrating!

I've had that error before. Lots of people have, tuned and untuned. The VANOS solenoids tend to fail like that. BMW is full of shit since that error can happen with or without modifications. In the US we have the Magnusson Moss act, which prevents dealers from denying you warranty coverage unless they prove the modification directly caused the problem. I don't know if you have something like that in the motherland, but it's worth researching. Your DPs didn't cause it, so tell them to prove it. They probably won't be able to.

So when I pick my car up yesterday I ask them how can it come from the downpipes? To sum it up what he said “well the engine can’t regulate the right way because you don’t have any cats in your car and that it’s just a pipe and not that good for the engine.” He also told me that maybe I probably shouldn’t modify my engine that hardcore. Where I responded I know at least 3 other who have modified there engine a bit more (meth) and they don’t have any problems. Not really happy with the place now, have to find a new dealership. So yeah is there maybe a DIY for this solenoid cleaning or changing?

There is a DIY somewhere, but its really easy. Just locate the solenoids on the front of the engine, then unhook the harness, then 1 bolt for each, pull em out and either clean with brake cleaner and let dry before reinstalling our just replace with new units. My opinion is to forgo the cleaning and go fir two new solenoids and change the oil at the same time.

+ 1 Cleaning it will buy you another few weeks or months at the most. Best of replacing it. A vanos solenoid is about $120 from memory and about 30 minutes max (15 if you've done it before), this includes removing the cowl and engine cover. Very easy to do.

I recently cleaned them on my X3 and it is night and day difference. I am going to clean the ones on my 135i this weekend. I would try cleaning before spending your hard earned money.

As for the DP's what a load of BS. It's part of the exhaust not the engine, don't see how that could be related in any way to a vanos code.

+1 on buying two new solenoids. I don't think they are that expensive either.

I would also change your oil. Its amazing how proper oil plays a role in ECL these days. A friend of mine is a Porsche Tech. PCNA had to buy back a 911 Turbo bc of a ECL. After they had thrown all these parts at the car and still did not fix it, they bought back the car. Then the tech did an oil change for the used car dept. Turns out THAT fixed the car. Turns out the owner was using too thick of a oil and it was throwing the ECL! lol The Vanous could not change the camshaft timing and hence it was throwing that code. lol

Also be aware that our cars sold thru MCS(military car sales) are of SULEV specs. ALL SULEV cars are covered by a 15 year/150K mile federal warranty! So I bet these solenoids are covered!! I just read that(page #28) in the November issue of Bimmer (with the orange M6 on the cover).
