Any one running gauges in the ashtray/cubbie?
I am looking at getting ashtray gauges for my 1M. I prefer them personally over the P3. I want to use CAN gauges though and build a CAN bus tap to retain all stock wiring etc...
Just curious if any one else is running CANBUS gauges in the panel or has anything like them. I want to view Post IC Temperatures. EGT and Coolant Temp. I am tempted to get a can boost gauge and right some code to make it work. I am convinced you can make a N54 read boost off a digital gauge (awron does it)....it may need filtering but that is a different story. Also any good CANBUS gauge suggestions are welcome. Thanks. |

I don't have a 1M, but I did find a customizable gauge display that plugs into the OBD2 connector:

CANBUS? Sorry but you would need to be well stoned to think fitting that halfords piece of kit was a good idea. In real terms how does it add to the experience? Saying that however i do realise each to their own etc so..... if you are going to fit it just make sure you can remove it without any sign remaining that it had ever been there in the first place, as that would be a contributory element of someone not wanting to buy your car over another if you ever chose to sell....

I would love to have a well designed gauge cluster that read out water temp, boost pressure, and AITs. I agree the MS offering posted above is not the right style nor is it really the right spot for something like that.

Canbus is how alpina does it:
http://www.awron.de/fileadmin/templa..._E8xDGA_01.pdf It isnt that hard of an install. I would just go buy my own BMW connectors and make proper pig tails therefore not needing to tap the wires. OBD2 is canbus FYI on our cars. BMW Racer what unit is that? Anyone using the Dashcommand OBD to iphone interface? If so what data can you pull? |

I guess you didn't notice the link I posted at the bottom of the pic...
It's an Ultragauge: http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/... Not bad for $70.

That's still one ginormous pill to swallow.

My Aquamist gauge lives there. At some point i'd like to tap a wideband gauge but as others have noted, that's not a good place for things that need to be monitored very closely.

Here's the list: http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/TEN/gauges.htm
You can program the ultragauge to display 4, 6, or 8 digital gauges at a time and program it to page through any set of gauges at a user-defined interval. I just have four gauges displayed all the time: coolant temp, battery voltage, intake air temp, and ambient temp. I wish it would display oil temp, but you can't have everything.

The list does indicate boost pressure, but since I don't have a turbo, I couldn't tell you if it's actually functional or not... Sorry.

I second Ian's advice. I have AWRON, and despite the heat in Dubai, I wouldn't for a second consider removing it - it's useful not just regularly on startup and temperature, but constantly whenever I'm in the car.
