1M Weight Thread
Thought I'd start a thread for 1M weight. Weight in options, weight reduction through aftermarket parts and so on... The biggest reason the 1M is quicker than the 135i is the lower weight through lighter suspension components and sunroof.
I posted this a few years back about the M3 but still helpful when discussing the 1M: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...0&postcount=15 Here is a great weight savings thread too that might be helpful: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135122 1M Diet Plan: Power seats: ~15lbs NAV: ~12lbs Ehanced Audio: ~20lbs Wiper Fluid: ~8.35lbs Battery: ~30lbs Braille Carbon Fiber Roof: ~14.0lbs IND Exhaust: Hood: ~28lbs iCarbon DS CF Trunk: ~23.3lbs iCarbon DS CF Mobilty Kit & Holder: ~3.02 lbs Rear Headrests: 1.73 lbs Trunk Floor Cover/Mat: 8.26 lbs Trunk Lid Lining: 2.07 lbs Front Plate+Holder: 0.83 lbs

Wouldn't 1m have the same battery as 135i? Which is 53lbs instead of 60lbs.

Does anyone know which lightweight front bucket seats will fit? Along with taking out the rear seats & battery swap = probably amongst the most cost-effective weightloss plan.

Hi Metak,
ther's a short list where a guy modded his 1M. Lists the stock weights (in kg): I'll translate: Complete front wheel: 21,8kg Complete rear wheel: 23,3kg (Someone could compare the weights to those measured above, to find out how accurate this list is) Brake disc front: 10,6kg Brake disc rear: 9,5kg Front caliper w. pad: 7,2kg Rear caliper w. pad: 5,6kg Then it has "total brake" (32,9kg) and "total wheel" (45,1kg) where I am not sure exactly what he threw together to come up with that figure. Total unsprung mass: 78kg "Fahrwerk" (shocks, springs and everything to mount the stuff) complete: 32kg Seats driver/passenger: 68kg (he lists the performance seats he has in the car at 42kg together) Exhaust system: 35kg Then he has a "stock total" and a "modded total" and thus calculates the weight he has saved (70kg). This btw is the original source: Link.

you could get down under half that again with ABR pole positions including side mounts and runners, and much cheaper with more lateral support, even a complete re-upholster (half leather, half alcantara) to match the interior finish would be the lightest and cheapest option, hmmm might look into that....... |

'Complete wheel' = rim + tire 'complete front wheel' = 26,0lbs + 24,0lbs (PS2 245/35/19)* = 11,8kg + 10,9kg = 22,7kg (List -> 21,8kg) 'complete rear wheel' = 26,8lbs + 25,0lbs (PS2 265/35/19)* = 12,2kg + 11,3kg = 23,5kg (List -> 23,3kg) The list can be considered accurate, there's only ~1kg difference in the 'complete front wheel' weight! One side (left or right): 'Total wheel' = 'complete front wheel' (21,8kg) + 'complete rear wheel' (23,3kg) = 45,1kg 'Total unsprung mass' = 'Total brake' (32,9kg) + 'Total wheel' (45,1kg) = 78kg Both sides (left and right): 'Total unsprung mass' = 2 x 'Total brake' (32,9kg) + 2 x 'Total wheel' (45,1kg) = 65,8kg + 90,2kg = 156kg *PS2 Tires weight Last edited by GoingTooFast; 08-10-2011 at 09:16 AM.. |

Removing the back seats isn't going to net much weight loss. I bet they don't weigh 10 lbs. I love the stock wheels but that is a ton of unsprung weight! Good thread, subscribed.

From the 70,3kg he could save in total, 36,4% corresponds to the unsprung mass - 156,0kg down to 130,4kg = 25,6kg - which is quite good because the higher the unsprung mass, the higher the force exerted on the spring of the suspension and the higher the force required to keep the wheel planted to the ground and this is what affects handling and traction. The unsprung mass also has an effect on the vehicle’s acceleration and deceleration mainly because of the rotational inertia - the heavier the wheel (and also larger in diameter the wheel), the more energy required to spin that mass up under acceleration and to spin that mass down under braking.

Would be great if a 1M owner w/ time and energy could remove and weigh their folding rear seat back. Side Bar: What about balance? Removing the rear seats + adding a light weight battery could remove like ~40 lbs,...but from the rear axle of the car. Seats, wheels, nav, upgraded stereo seems to remove weight in a more balanced way. Once I took out the rear seats, the spare, and the trunk lining in my e36 - I did feel I needed to be a bit more careful in certain driving situations. On rear seat removal: see this thread, he also built a panel to cover the hole.
They claim 60 lbs of savings, but I didn't see any pictures of anything on a scale. Anyway - pre track day flight check: change pads, top up oil, adjust your coil-overs and camber plates, and take out your back seat. Ready to go in ~1 hr? |

Updated Some Weight Info
Couple of questions:
1. Does BMWNA listed Unladen Weight of 3362lbs include all available options? I I know it is a "without passenger/cargo" figure. Also think it is without fuel, but am not certain. 2. Anyone know what the OEM axle back section of the exhaust weight is?
