TPMS question
If I pull off a wheel and start my car, why don't I get a TPMS warning light? I would have expected it to come on immediately when I start the car.
I'm just trying to verify some used wheels I bought (with tires) have TPMS sensors, so I was going to mount them. But I expected the light to come on when there is no wheel there! Do I need to drive for some distance before the light will come on? |

So I mounted the wheels, pulled out and TPMS reported Active.
About 1 mile into my drive, I got the notification TPMS Inactive and then the flashing and eventually solid TPMS light. |

I know the wheels have to rotate a bit for the TPMS sensors to kick in as they are periodic transmission bursts, I think once a minute. They go inactive when not rotating to save battery life. Did you reset the TPMS using the buttons on the turn stalk? I know when I have switched from my summer to winter wheels and drove off without resetting them, I have gotten the inactive warning but as soon as I stopped and hit the reset, they synced back up with no problems.

I did attempt to reset. It just reported Inactive.
Odd, I've switched from summer wheels to 2 different sets of winter wheels (both with TPMS) for the last 7 years and never encountered the Inactive warning |

The only other thing I can think of is check model years. They changed frequencies at some point and I know I originally had a 2009 and then got a 2012 and had to change to new sensors for the new frequency.
1 Series Built BEFORE 9/10 use Huf RDE008 TPMS sensors Built ON or AFTER 9/10 use Huf RDE012 TPMS sensors Just last weekend I got the inactive warning because I rotated the tires myself and then had to run to the grocery store before changing tire pressure and resetting and it apparently realized this somehow and gave me the inactive warning. Next day fixed tire pressures and hit reset and it's back to normal again. Other than that, not sure what to tell you. |

TPMS have limited battery life. It could possibly me that the sensors are just low battery and need to be replaced.
Weather also seems to affect TPMS sensors too (especially older ones). After warming up the tires, the light would go away at least for me after a cold start parked outside. |
