BMW PE vs 135i vs 135i+Res Delete Exhaust

In case anyone has been contemplating doing the BMW Performance Exhaust, 135i axleback, or 135i + resonator delete on their 128i, below is my review.

BMW PE: The BMW PE was the loudest out of the 3 and sounded great. However, I did not like that it was present at all times. Although most reviews have stated there is no drone, I still had some on the highway at certain speeds. I might be more sensitive than others though. It did sound the best out of the 3 though especially at higher rpms.

OEM 135i axleback: I could only hear this exhaust between 1500-2700 rpms. It was probably about 10-15% louder in that range. Perfect for those that want some noise driving around the city, but non-existent cruising on the highway.

135i + Resonator Delete: This is perfection for myself. It is loud enough and sounds great. I would say it is 80-90% as loud as the BMW PE. However, if you're just cruising, then it's quiet. There is no drone whatsoever. To me is the perfect balance exhaust for a daily driver.

I'm already planning to do the 135i Muffler with Res delete...you just justified it even more to me.

Agreed! I started with the 135i axelback, then got the resonator delete, then went with the PE + res delete because I wanted more volume. However, best sound was 135i + resonator delete plus it was the PERFECT volume for a daily.

I'd say a secondary cat delete with two resonators in place of your muffler is the perfect sound level for a daily driver.

personally, I really like the way the N52 sounds with its resonator.

I don’t get the appeal for the 135i muffler.
The stock stuff doesn’t flow that well, and is heavy.

But it’s quiet.

I have seen pics of the inside of each mufflers, the 135i muffler flows better than the 328i muffler, it is a better design and the pipes are slightly bigger. It is a middle ground between the stock and a performance muffler

It is more close to a straight through design. It has a vacuum flap on the longer pipe which when closed make the exhaust flow as in a resonated chamber ( it goes through the 2 or 3 bog wholes in the middle)

Inside the n52 muffler
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1241192
It is more restrictive and is more chambered design.

I never tried the 135i muffler but i speak from what i searched. The pipes of the 135i are slightly bigger (i read it somewhere) also i have spoken to a member here that installed a 135i exhaust on an n52 with headers and said it was a great combo and a middle ground muffler

I've got a 135i backbox, with mid-resonator still in place. A little quiet still. Will remove the mid-resonator for a y-pipe, seems like the best way to go!

You hit the nail on the head. It's quiet when needed and loud enough when you want it to be if suited with a res delete. Just the 135i muffler alone I agree is pretty useless.

Does the resonator delete require any extra parts? I’m bone stock and just want a little bit more sound and thinking resonator delete makes the most sense from a price and noise perspective

Yes, any exhaust shop you go to will cut out your resonator and weld in a straight pipe, which they should stock.

A muffler isn't going to do much if anything to increase HP on these cars unless you're doing headers. Might as well go for the best sound. 135 is able to produce over 300hp and tq with that muffler. Should be able to flow well enough for our 230hp!

To avoid creating yet another thread, can anyone confirm that the 135i Performance Exhaust Y-Pipe will be able to clamp onto the 128i mid-pipes? I'm being offered a unit at a very reasonable price, and it would be a perfect two-birds-with-one-stone ordeal for bolting up a stock 135i axle-back and doing a resonator delete.

I measured the O.D. of the 128i midpipes at right around 2 1/4" (erring low) and the seller measured the I.D. of the 135i Y-Pipe at right around 2 1/4" (erring high) as well. On paper, it should work, but I know that there are way more variables and too little information than necessary to confirm it. This would make this (imo) fantastic-sounding combo a bolt-on and super easy affair...

mine if I can recall correctly was 2 and 1/4 when I had mine straight piped. Should bolt up just fine, if not some creative welding should do the trick. If you want crazy backfires and burbles, go secondary cat delete as well!

Will the 135i Performance Exhaust work with the N52? Assume it might need a bit of modification, but will it still sound okay?

Here is my 130i with 135i PE and Resonator delete. I don't feel there is any drone, just a sporty exhaust, quiet when idling and under 3k rpm, sounds amazing up the top. Get some pops and cracks.

I did a DIY resonator delete. I cut open the resonator and wrapped the perforated holes with header tape wrap and secured it with hose clamps.
