Out of Warranty: Remove Mods for Recall?
Finally getting in for the VANOS bolts recall next week. My car is a 03/10 build 2011 model so it's out of warranty, but I'm just wondering if there's any reason I should be taking my mods off (JB4/meth)? I'd rather not, but just thinking of a worst case scenario where they screw something up and later I have to convince them that any problems I'm having are due to their work (assuming it is). How invasive is this repair? Anyone know if they'll have to remove the JB anyway if I do leave it on?

If you are having the recall done, I wouldn't worry about it. A recall is a legal requirement, they can not refuse whatever the mods.

For whatever it's worth. If you have a JB4 you can set it to map 0, then plug it into your laptop and disable the steering wheel controls. So they can't easily tell it's there unless the open up the box. As far as I know anyways.
If it's for out of warranty recall work, I wouldn't remove anything. Meth would be the only thing I would consider taking out. And even that... you're out of warranty! As said before they have to perform the recall work at no cost to you.

I had work done on the 1M for a battery cable recall or whatever and I never removed any mods. I DID disable the tune before handing over the keys though. Mind you, I wasn't worried about ruining my warranty at the time. I'm well past the mileage limit on the initial warranty now.
Just don't give them a reason to delay the recall because something (tune) is preventing them from accessing the OBD. They can't deny you simply because your car is modified.

Only thing I would worry about with JB4 is the tech routing the harness wrong.. I've seen it before. Most techs are mod-stupid and don't understand how any of it works, so after work is done i'd just double check the JB harness/connectors and make sure nothing is kinked/chafing.

So I brought my car in with mods in-place for the VANOS repair this morning, as well as the battery cable recall which I never had done. They told me in the morning that they would probably have it done by the end of the day but the service guy just called to say they're "having some difficulty getting it all back together" (tore a gasket and whatever) so it'll have to stay overnight and new ETA is noon tomorrow. Not exactly confidence-inspiring.

Got the VANOS Bolt recall done today. Went flawlessly and took them 3.5 hours to do.
This dealership has done 90 VANOS recall jobs so far, and were pretty comfortable with the task. They found no broken bolt heads, but went ahead and replaced them as per procedure. Pedigree: 2011 135i which sees a lot of track time, and several oil changes per season. May 2010 Prod date with 67,000Kms on the odometer ...

I left my on. Granted all I had was the charge pipe and intercooler. Took em 2 days to get it done. They just called me at 5 tonight and said it was done. I'll pick it up in the morning. Guessing since it took so long they actually replaced the bolts. Which is good.

Picked-up the car today and gave her a good "shakedown" on the way home. Happy to say all seems ok at this point, no weird noises or hiccups. I laughed when I read the work order, they wrote, "CEL illuminated at time of service - vehicle has some sort of aftermarket chip installed underhood and mass air flow meter by by airbox connection taped up with blue tape".
I guess the jig is up. |
