Cheapest place to buy BMW approved oil?
Where is the cheapest place to source some BMW approved oil for our 135i? I think it's BMW SAE-5W-30 Synthetic Oil that we need, not sure which brand it actually is. I'm also trying to chase down the cheapest place to get oil filters and rings as well. I'm considering buying between 20-40 litres depending on price and if there is an incentive to buy larger amounts.

Not sure where to buy BMW oil, but dealership told me to use any 0w-40 oil.
I found the Genuine BMW Oil filter was as cheap as anywhere else, but bought Castrol Edge oil from Repco with my mates trade card (not that I got much of a discount!) |

BMW at westside and Brisbane generally just use shell helix ultra. You can find this at your local super cheap auto. Their normal price is cheaper than what BMW charge, however best to catch them when they have their 20% sale.

I use Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0w-40. Does a fantastic job and have actually noticed a fuel economy increase since i started using it. Dropping from around 9.5l/100km to about 8.8-9 city driving.

Castrol sells their RS Edge LL-4 oil in either a five liter jug or just one liter bottles - over here in Germany.
5L costs 80 euros 1L costs 23 euros I can buy the 5L jug for 50 euros with my discount and without any German tax(19% Vat) over here. Last edited by Dackelone; 02-21-2011 at 03:06 PM.. |

I know 5 Litres of Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0w-40 is about $92 at SuperCheap, and a comparable price at Autobarn.

Okay so my dealership tells me they use Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 fully synthetic oil. They also said BMW recommend Castrol Edge and Mobile 1.
Which Castrol Edge is everyone using? - Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 or Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40? Also, what about Castrol SLX Professional Longtec BMW LL01 5W-30? Anyone know if there is any difference between Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 fully synthetic oil and Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-40 fully synthetic oil? At this stage I'm thinking I will go with Shell as that's what my dealer uses. |

Cheers Tim. I think I'm leaning towards the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 which is what the dealer uses.
http://www.shell.com.au/home/content...t_range/ultra/ From what I understand the 10W-60 is to be used only on M cars. Let me know how it goes for you, I may consider changing in the future. Last edited by BMW86; 07-01-2010 at 08:07 PM.. |

BTW - I notice in the Castrol / Ronaldo (Hot places.....cold places) ad that his M3 tops up with 0W-40, though I reckon it's just an oversight not intended to be picked up by sharp-eyed M3 fanatics!

So I popped into Supercheap and they have Shell Helix Ultra and Castrol Edge available in 5 litres. There is a huge difference in price, the Shell Helix Ultra is a lot more expensive so I think Castrol might be the way to go. They can source a 20 litre drum of Castrol Edge at roughly $220. They can only get the Shell Helix Ultra in a 200 litre drum.

I think it depends on the dealership. My dealer uses Shell and it looks like some others are using Castrol |

When I was living in London they used castrol SLX, in brisbane up to a few years ago they used Mobil 1 and in the last few years they have been using shell helix ultra. Mobil 1 and shell helix ultra are the 2 companies top oils for performance cars. They are also supposedly one of the best you can use for your car. There has been a lot of data and reviews on these 2 and to be honest I dont think you can go wrong with either.
My e46 has been on an exclusive diet of mobil 1 or shell helix ultra. It has now covered 160,000 km and the engine is as nice as it was at 20k. |
