https://www.bmwblog.com/2015/01/07/bmw-history-m535i/

The M535i was a very special car, and not just one of the cars that BMW would slap M badges on because they wanted them appear to be sportier and more special than they actually were with some cosmetics.

Take my M Sport packaged 135i for example, which is no different than the standard Sport packaged 135i except for the 7 M badges that came with it, plus the 261 wheels, which have 4 of the 7 M badges and aren't as nice as the 264s that came on the 'regular' Sport package imo, and the anthracite headliner. The other 3 M badges are: 1 on each doorsill, and 1 on BMW's excellent M steering wheel, that also came on the Sport package.

PS - I got rid of the 261s in favor of my 313s. Sadly, now I only have 3 M badges. Woe is me... lol
4! Unless you took off your shift knob, too.

That only comes on the 6-speed and I have the DCT. But you're right anyway because I forgot the one on the dead pedal.

Well, at least I have 4. Must mean my car is 4 times better than a 'normal' 135i.

I only have 1 on the steering wheel. Does that mean it's a 1 M?

I really wish they'd keep it separate ala MB AMG. The worst is the "m235i" in the GAUGE CLUSTER of those cars. I guess the 19 year old kids who's parents are leasing the car for them like it.

Personally I like the stripes on the grill, but its gotta be a real M otherwise its just a boy racer thing IMO.

And the longer it goes on the more I realize I'm being a scrooge about it/the more people just 'accept it'. Its like the DCT... that is not a manual... nor is your m235 a real M car... but I guess if I were 20 I wouldn't know any better, or care rather.
BMW itself considers the M235i to be the first of five tiers of M car now.
M tech: production car with bought m parts added to the car will have M badges in it
M cars, according to BMW anyway

M performance model: ex: M235i basically a production car with a tune and the Mtech parts, repurposed the old m535i name to create a tier equivalent to the successful S brand at Audi. The 'is' nomenclature used to fill this role...
M2: The M car developed by the M division, usually with its own engine seperate from the production line and ideally supposed to be a detuned race engine, ala the e30 M3, e92 M3, M6 and coming 8.

M2 M performance: you buy the upgrades on your M2 from the new M performance line

M2 competition: more power and all the upgrades

M2 csl/gts a weight reduced close to a race car as you can get street car

I think it's dumb too. They kind of want to do what Porsche did to the 911 and scrape peoples wallets clean. Making 'the best' car about $30 grand later.

Of course these stupid decisions are encouraged and rewarded by the type of people who buy / lease new cars. They need NEW and BADGES to upgrade to every year.

I know a chock who upgraded her Camry to a brand new one because she NEEDED apple car play and the new one is "sporty" now. ?

Remember when the old 8 series was an M car in develment but BmW refused to call it an M car because it was too big and heavy and would damage the M brand?

Well the new generation demands stuff and things to show off and they will gladly pay a monthly fee for the privelage and BMW is happy to oblige.

Yeah, there were a lot of other earlier uses of the M badge, too. The M Design 325is is a good example:

There was also the M Tech E30 stuff, like this E30 wagon that came with M badges, M stripes on the seats, and an M steering wheel.

They also threw one on the engine of the 850CSi:

I wouldn't mind having cloth over leather. We have a member here, swagon, who I think has cloth seats in his F80 M3.

Yeah, my point was simply that BMW has been slapping ///M badges on non-M cars for a long time.

Never again. The last time I got cloth, my 3 year old projectile vomited in the car two days after purchase, and, man, that really soaked in. I had the whole damn thing reupholstered in leather.

One could argue that only the homologation M cars are the true M cars.

Ill take cloth seats any day and do when at all possible. See nothing wrong with subtle OEM M badging on a car with M package= but to each their own.

Here is a longer, more detailed video of the original BMW Motorsport racing team. It's almost 20 minutes long, so watch it during your coffee/lunch break if you are interested. I was, and enjoyed it. If you've already seen it, then pass, if you don't feel like watching it again.
