BMW roof rack + bike holder

I just installed my roof rack. I got it from Dan @ united.
It fits well.
It floats just over the painted area.
The mountain bike attachment even has a locking key.
All of the bolts are specially keyed.

Yea they have a rear mount bike holder. Even with a coupe I am looking at it as I have very low clearance in my garage.

I have a Thule rack, similar opinions to that of the BMW one, effort to put on and off all the time but it can be done. I don't have a bike rack on it, but a ski rack, but same thing really!

I checked the Thule. it does does the paint which i was worried about. Also it was much more $$ than the OEM pieces.
The trunk one looks nice but it also was alot more $$.

Thanks for posting the pics. I am getting the roof rack and was curious to how it mounted. Regarding bike trays, I think you can put Thule fork mount trays on them (like the Peloton). It requires a flat square nut (sold by Thule) to work. I currently have a Mini with the factory rack and it has the same grove in the cross bar that the trays mount to. The factory Mini trays are actually Thule V2 (now up-dated to the peloton) trays re-badged as Mini with the square nut in the cross bar tray.

Test drove with it today.

Silent until 60mph then of course you can hear it on the roof..

I will mention that I was amazed by the drop in economy with this rack on my roof. In my previous car it took it from maybe 32-35 down to 27-30mpg, but in the 1er it goes from 40-45 to 30-35 with the rack on average mpg, which is not cool!

What do you mean by it does the paint? It hovers over the roof of the car, not actually resting on it at the 4 connections points via the screws if that's what you mean?

I prefer the rear mount option. Easier loading/unloading the bike, less impact on mileage, no wind noise, less chances you'll scatch the paint. On my G35 I installed a hitch and bought a hitch mount bike rack. When not needed, removing the bike rack took only seconds and the hitch was very descreet. I'll proabably go rear mount/hitch again on my 1er assuming that's an option for the coupe.

What are the trails like in Orlando?

john08135i,

you're thread is very helpful, I'm trying to install the rack right now. How did you manage to get the rack "float" in the rear? In the front it's not touching the paint at all, but in the rear on both left and right side of the car it's straight on the roof. Please, advise ..

Did you install the "springs" that black plastic pieces that fit inside the roof with sticky tape?

Yes, I have and I double checked - they are both aligned properly and I'm using the rear ones in the rear. I'm not really sure what's the problem :-/

After replying I went to check out the alignment again and I had the right insert on the left and vice versa. I just didn't see the problem when I looked at it before. Now it's floating in the rear also. Thanks for such a quick reply ..

I'll post pictures when I'm done.

yeah, I checked that out - dealer want to charge 660 euro to install. MUCH cheaper to get it at the time order.

AND nice garage setup. What does those run anyway... that's what I need when I get back to the states...

It was $US 75 to "prep" the car for the rear bumper mounted bike rack. There are 2 small covers on my rear bumper, that I assume you remove to attatch the bike carrier (which I have not ordered yet).

I prefer not to use the on top carriers, and have previously used hitch mounted bike carriers, and some trunk/bumper mount carriers on cars without hitches. I did find a hitch for my 528 a bunch of years ago, worked very well.
