wait 1 year for oil change

Yeah i wasn't sure so i never said specifically. I just know that it was a relatively low mileage motor which shouldnt look like that.

I change it every 3k I know may be overkill, But I like to drive the car hard. It's an easy DIY and cheap.

Do used dealerships change the oil and flush fluid before they sell the car again?

I made the mistake of not checking the service history before I purchased the car and I drove the car for ~6000 miles before I changed the oil, but the owner before hasn't changed the oil for ~4000 miles...

So I basically drove the car on the same oil for ~10k miles, I found out about this recently and it makes me sad ]:

It depends on how cheap that used car dealer is. lol

I would ask them for a repair order showing you the oil was changed. It wouldn't hurt the car to change the oil(& filter) again just to get rid of any old oil/sludge.

Even BMW themselves revised it down by 33%. They were clearly experiencing enough issues within 100k miles(the area in which they care) that they had to revise it down to where we have been saying for years.

Writing is on the wall, choice is yours to read it.

^^Yup! Oil is indeed cheaper than an engine or engine internal parts. We have had countless BMW techs comment here on 1Addicts that IF you want to keep your car change the oil often. Its just common sense, which isn't so common these days!

If you are hitting the track, that definitely makes sense.

I also like to sample and send every second change or so to Blackstone for analysis. Cheap and a great way to stay on top of upcoming issues.

Contact Mike Miller at Roundel and request a copy of his old school maintenance schedule. You will not go wrong following it. Mike's tech advice column in Roundel is worth the price of joining the BMWCCA. Likewise his column in Bimmer is worth the price of a subscription.

Around 2 track days and 15-20 autocrosses a year.

Agreed.

I think it is a great way to get a good analysis of your engine and track how it is wearing. Cheap, valuable information for longtime ownership. Kind of like taking your car to the doctor for blood work.

Just ordered my free test kit from Blackstone. Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard of them before.

I'm no car maintenance expert, but I followed the BMW recommended 15K oil change intervals for my previous 2004 E46 (325i), and ended up with a gunked up engine with chronic low oil pressure at 117K.

This time around with my 2013 E82 (135is), I'm going to do oil changes every 5K max. Maybe I was just unlucky with a bad engine on the E46, but there aren't going to be anymore of these E82s made and I'd like to keep it for a very long time. Certainly longer than the 9 years I drove my E46.

Lots of short trips probably promote engine sludge too. Longer trips (like maybe 20 miles) fully warm up the drive train, heat up the oil and burn off condensation. Working up to redline occasionally seems like a good idea too for our thoroughbred cars.

I'm OCD about minimizing shorts trips, in fact I actually PUSH my cars out of the garage without starting them in order to wash them (plus bonus my neighbors think I'm weird).

I'm sticking with 5K OCIs until the oil analyses indicate wear bits have stabilized (maybe at 30K miles or so), then I might extend to 7.5K OCIs if oil analysis TBN results support it.

In my opinion 7500 mile oil change intervals (once the engine's broken in, and assuming quality oil) are probably reasonable for most of us, and those of us who always take long trips and warm up the drive train fully can probably extend oil changes to 10K, but no more than that.

One thing that no one has mentioned is using a magnetic oil drain plug. This also helps to cut down on the metallic bits floating around your engine. Also using a BMW oil filter and not some cheap Chinese filter helps too.

^^^ I have these Dimple magnetic drain plugs in my engine, transmission and differential. Money well spent.

I buy oil & filters from my dealer - with BMW CCA discount it's actually cheaper than buying it elsewhere, I'm using the correct OEM products, and I have supporting documentation if warranty issues ever arise.
