135 USB interface

Hi

I have just bought a used 135 coupe. I figured most of the things out but I cannot figure out how to play music from a USB flash drive. When I select USB on the radio nothing happens or INSERT USB appears. I have tried with two different USB flash drives and both seem to work when plugged in (light on the USB flash drive is on) but USB flash drive is not recognized by car. Should I format USB flash drive with some special format? Does it take some time (how long) before car recognizes USB flash drive? Should songs be organized in some special folder organization?

I would really appreciate any help.

I format my usb flash drive using the FAT32 format. No problem with the car, immediately recognized once you plug in.

On my car sometimes when I insert a USB stick or when I leave it attached... my radio does not recognize the flash drive. When that happens, I just remove the flash drive and reinsert it. It takes a few secs and then the flash drive will pop up on the four icon audio display menu. Give it a try. G.L.

Dont put the music into any folders, just let them run free on the flash stick, lol. Seriously though, thats how it works for me. Also make sure nothing else is on the stick, dedicate it only for music in your car.

Might help if you tell us what kind and size flash drive you are trying to use. I have an 8GB PNY cheap-o stick that oddly has the same built in light color as the rest of the BMW's orange interior.

Also, congrats on the new car and welcome to the site!

Are you using the USB port in the glovebox? IIRC, the manual says flash drives won't play from the USB port in the armrest (if you have that) - you have to use the one in the glovebox.

+1, Check the memory format because the car won't recognize NTFS. Not sure if it recognizes FAT but it will recognize FAT32.

Where exactly in the glove box is this "extra" USB port?

My car does not have one - in the glove box. I don't have navi either. Only the 6FL option (USB port in the center console area).

I use a regular flash drive. Anwhere from 2Gb to 8Gb. It makes no differnce if I put the MP3 files into an extra folder or not. Its better directly on the flash drive, but IF you put the songs into a folder that is just one more folder you have to click on in the radio display menu.

Its at the top right - very hard to see unless you get your head down there; it's for loading music onto the hard drive in the i-drive so if you dont have that then you wont have the USB port in the glovebox either I think.

I have done a simple test. I formatted the drive using FAT32 and placed a single song named 1.mp3 on it. USB drive still doesn't get recognized. I guess there is a problem with my USB interface. I will get it fixed and report on what was the problem...

Thank you all for your help!

EDIT: I really have to stop posting before I've had my coffee.

I've never had to explicitly format any of my flash drives, just drag and drop mp3's onto it and it works fine.

Yeah probably so, not sure windows could read/write to them if they weren't.

What does the stick look like in Windows Explorer? Formatted FAT32?
It is a 8GB SanDisk cruzer with only one partiton (FAT32). There are 4 songs on the stick 01.mp3 ... 04.mp3. I have also tried with different stick and with Ipad but it didn't work. Strange is that when I plug in an Ipad, it turns on which means (I think) that there is some data connection going on.

I often seem to have trouble getting it to recognize my iPhone, often have to plug it in and unplug it multiple times before it will finally work. Haven't tried a thumbdrive yet but maybe that would be an easier alternative then the phone...

Excellent - no more standing in line at the polls

Babel fish says the same, BTW. Somehow I think something is getting lost in translation.

I had the same problem when I picked my car up on ED. The ED rep said it had to be a defective cable, cause it seemed to work consistently with her cable (tho she only tried it a couple of times).

But when I got it home to the US, I got the snap-in iPhone adapter to use with my SA639 option, and that seems to work without problems. So I don't need to use the cable.

Still, I need to ask the dealer why the cable option doesn't work consistently.
