Any update??

I had the same thing... it was the Automatic transmission. It was giving off a bad smell during the break in. Went away after about 150 miles.

Seriously, my 1er makes my GF sick - nauseous. It might have something to do with the acceleration pushin her into the seat.

10 weeks later the car has pretty much gassed-out, the interior no longer strongly reeks chemicals, it still smells of 'new car' though not enough to put you off.

In all seriousness, the first time i read this post i didn't think much of it, interesting at best...UNTIL i picked up my car at the performance center. After driving around there car all day i was fine....when i took delivery of mine, i kid you not, within about 20 minutes of drivin i start getting this big dull headache and it would NOT go away. I only drove about 4 hours that first night but it reminded me of this post. Needless to say i think i drove the next 500 miles with the windows down and i was fine haha. The car is good now but i think there is def some truth in this post!

Just saw this today, kinda freaky how toxic some of this stuff is. 128 vert is right on the top of the list :-( My civic gave me headaches all the time though, i think some of the headaches and other symptoms might be explained by being in a cramped area with lots of motion, loud music and/or road noise(in my civic).

I love the new car smell and can't get enough of it. I keep my windows shut hoping it will last longer.

My g/f says she always gets sick from sitting in cars with the "new car smell". Some people are just sensitive, shes going to be gutted when my 1 arrives!

My wife got so intensely lightheaded and disoriented that she had me pull over for a minute today...however she attributed it to the navigation system; she was entering an address into the Nav at the time. Probably not related but possibly.

The first month with the car, I had to stop off on my way home for some coffee. I felt awful, windows had to be down even on the hottest of days.

Out of curiosity, do you guys feeling sick have leather or leatherette seats? I wonder if the man-made material vs. leather makes a difference.

When we went shopping for our 1 series, we test drove a 128i with leatherette. My wife felt sick on the test drive, but we figured it was my aggressive driving. A few days later we sat in another 128i with leatherette, and the same nausea returned. In the end, we bough a car with Boston leather, and so far she has not felt sick or nauseous once.

My vote is that your GF has a sensitivity to the synthetic material used in the leatherette - assuming your car isn't leather.

leatherette is made from PVC which contains lead, a chemical known to cause cancer

http://www.calprop65.com/pvc.html

"Leatherette is a form of artificial leather, usually made by covering a fabric base with plastic. The fabric can be made of a natural or a synthetic fibre which is then covered with a soft PVC layer." (from wikipedia)

There is a general purpose warning on page 6 of the manual, but it doesn't say exactly what parts of the interior are effected.

The 128 CNN tested probably had the leatherette.
