I put in 6 QTS, let it idle, checked the electronic Dipstick (it said full) "oil level OK" , this is right ? or should I put the full 7 ?

what do u think guys ?

Had the same observation when I changed my oil, but then, some days later I heard a Ding that later appeared on the display telling that the level was LOW.
Fill it with 7, as the manual says.

Cheers

I use Royal Purple also! Love that stuff. BTW, I used all 7 quarts without an issue. Oil level still says its topped off.

Wish we had a dip stick!!! Digital display lack incremental feedback.

Head good things about royal purple, why do you guys use that over BMW Performance Synthetic?

6 is fine, add more only if the computer tells you.

When I did mine, I measured 6 qts of oil out of the car, so I replaced it with 6. 1.5mo later and 500mi, so far so good.

*EDIT* 1000 posts w00t!

Is it hard to change the oil on the E82? Sometimes the filter location can be a biatch...just curious....

Oil change is easy. The hardest part of the whole process is getting the car up in the air. Filter location is right next to the valve cover and is accessible on top of the engine bay.

There is a DIY and a video detailing the whole process.

I used all 7 quarts supplied in the kit that United BMW Dan carries. No problems. DIY calls for 6.9 quarts, figure I'd lost about a tenth with residual left from each bottle.

***If you're considering a DIY oil change, read through the oil change threads...bump for fabricating something to deflect the draining oil. Plus get a wide drain pan, use gloves. It's HOT!!! Fortunately synthetic cleans up easily ****

I've always read (and it makes sense to me) to put in 6 quarts and then if the on-board computer tells you that the oil level is low then you can put more in. The comp will not tell you if you overfill the engine, so putting in 7 could be just the right amount, or a quart too much, and you would never know. Seems better to be sure of how much oil you have in your car, not just take a shot in the dark.

I haven't confirmed this, and don't plan to, but the manual says there is a ">MAX" indicator if the oil level is too high.

Royal Purple is kinda one of those specialty oils, hasn't built a huge name for itself yet. I don't think anyone uses it as an oem oil.

I firsts read about this oil when the Army was getting fantastic results using it in their generators during this current Iraq war. They were able to run these things 24 hours a day for 30 days straight, change the oil with Royal Purple, run them another 30 days, and so on. They hadn't lost a generator engine for over 2 years with this stuff.

Just start from their website and go from there: www.royalpurple.com

The official spec is 6.9qt for all N51-54 engines. I always add 7 to the cars I work on, and it's never been a problem.

None. Most track junkies are running Redline instead.

We use Redline in all our vehicles with exception of our e46 M3 which specifies Castrol 10W60.

S85, S65, and certain S62 cars (depends on build date) require 10W60 as well.
