135i convertible 3rd brake light problems

Is anyone having problems with the third brake light on the truck of a 135 convertible breaking? I have replaced the light twice and it is broken again. The light itself isn't broken but the red light cover keeps cracking and falling off. I don't use the trunk at all so it isn't that I am slamming it. What could it be? I am sick of paying 500$ to replace a stupid light cover.

agreed, this should be replaced free of charge. I've seen the issue a few times from different members and its always been covered.

Mine was cracked and the dealership replaced it under warranty. This is a known flaw and should cost you nothing to fix.

Well known issue. I can't imagine why you would have to pay to have it fixed.

Last time I got my 3rd brake light lense replaced unde warranty, but my dealer told me for most body parts, they can only cover it once per body part. If next time, the same lense failed, they said BMW won't cover it under warranty.

I've had mine replaced twice under warranty. No mention of me having to pay for the third replacement when it happens.

To the OP- Why would you pay for the replacement?

Mine is slightly cracked, but it has been for months and the cracks have not gotten any worse.

I noticed mine was cracked quite recently after I got it (coupe though). I guess I'll bring it up next time I bring it in for service.

Yep. Had mine replaced when it cracked and dangled by a thread as I drove dumb and happy down the road. Yeah, embarassing.

Anyway, the TSB fix is not just replacing the lens, but they actually shave down the area where the lens fits so the new one wont crack. If it is a continual problem, I would guess they didn't shave it down enough.

I noticed mine was cracked about a month ago. Service in about 3 weeks. Will ask for it to be replaced. Thanks for posting.

I would ask them to refer to SIB 63 10 08 and ask them to refund your money.

Since it is important safety feature you can request to replace your car under lemon law, reasonable amount of times the problem couldn't be fixed.

Given the widespread occurance of this problem and it's very obvious location, I would expect BMW to eventually do a recall on this. Repeated failures will leave them with no alternative.

The reason the dealership charged me is because they said someone or something must have hit the light to crack it. The first time it was cracked it almost looked like it was chipped because a piece of the red covering was missing. I admit, I didn't know either way because it certainly wasn't hit when I was in the car. Now, a few months later the red covering is completely off the light and the white part is still in the car.

Can I get my money back for the first repair??
