OUCH! That's almost $20,000 more than I paid for my M Sport 135i, an almost a 50% increase in price.
You know you can't do a straight conversion. German cars are massively subsidized in the U.S. and the price will be much lower.

Correct, not in its current factory spec. I would expect the M1 to take whatever Cayman S is out at the time since the M3 does just that. At least it does so at VIR's lightning lap. Sorry, I still can't get over what fantastic things the //M division is capable of.

I guess we're talking acceleration, because it can't beat its Cayman equivalent in the corners. Trust me.

///M mystique used to be more definitive than it is today, unfortunately. Since the watering down of the vaunted M, almost to wholesale level, we could get anything from that division these days. Sad, really. I do hope that they do this car right.

Make is a couple hundred pounds lighter, fewer amenities, more serious, a smidgen more power, an M variable diff, and better suspension. I could give 2 flying poops about fenders or hood treatment, DCT, and I don't really care about CF, if they make it light enough without it.

I do not think the M division cares about this vapor car performing better than the M3, as it likely will (unless it's made as more of a marketing package).... just for the same reason that the M3 performs better than the M5.

It is not about subsidizing, it is about purchasing power. Currency and economies are very complex. The Economist publishes the "Big Mac Index" just for this very reason. A dollar buys more goods than a Euro- even a Coke for a Coke in the same amount is cheaper in the most expensive US locale.

Money is an amusing thing, but in the end you are correct you can not do a direct exchange rate conversion for goods without taking in purchasing power. Taking purchasing power into consideration (the Euro is about 28% over valued in a direct conversion).

I agree with you, Larryn. It's going to be interesting seeing the M5 and M1 released in the same here though.

The only reason to NOT call it an M1 is if they are going to resurrect that moniker for an R8 competitor.

I wish like hell they would find a way to shoehorn in the M3's V8 into the M1's engine bay. I would pay serious amounts of money for that.

I think that they can name it what they want. People will buy it regardless. If they call it the M1 and they decide to do a R8 competitor they can just call it the BMW M. No model designation just M. It doesn't sound cool but in the end I think the marketing teams will have a better idea of what to do with the name.

If they trot out the big guns to go after the R8, how about naming it the "M!" (exclamation point included)

As for the 135 along with an M, there is a 328, a 335, and the M3 - why not 3 levels in the 1 Series?

Have Fun,
Rick

Because the M1 has been done. I do not expect the new M supercar to be called the M1 as I do not believe it will be an M1 sucessor.

Also, when BMW made a super high performance roadster (Z8) it was a higher number. Its loose logic I know, but its just speculation, no better or worse than someone who says the M 1er will or wont be called the M1.

Until acutal evidence is put forward I can believe whatever I want, just as you can.

We are not going after the R8. BMW do not follow the competition.

The Product expansion for our compact models and Project-i Programme is the current focus within BMW.

We can make more profit from a range of models developed from an initial platform than we can by producing one platform for one car.
We have just went through a very tough economic climate where we found that customers were downsizing to smaller , more efficient vehicles.
With the highest growth to be made in the coming decade is within the compact segment and BMW will offer a portfolio of premium compact models. Cars that will fit within the BMW image by offering compact Sporty models with excellent driving dynamics that would shame cars costing two or three times as much. Again BMW have just shown up their key competitors who are now scrambling to offer solutions for their compact platforms.

The E82 M1 is the grand finale but it is also the beginning of a new chapter.
And a new era in compact performance BMW's.

The name M1 was put to a focus group in December and in voting , M1 had the highest amount of votes from a marketing point of view it resonates more and offers continuity with the rest of the M portfolio.
Regarding the M1 supercar , There will be no production car of the M1 homage , That concept was strictly as it was termed a Homage. the M1 supercar is a product of the seventies and it has a rich history both as a concept and in motorSport. It is time to leave the car to History so it will never be forgotten and open a new chapter for the 1 series.

That's about as likely as Porsche putting the 911 engine in the Cayman.
