Unhappy '12 128i with 119k w/SULEV broke down.

Brought it to my local mechanic. Apparently it's the fuel control unit. It will run for about 10 minutes before failing after which it needs to wait about 30 before restart.

No symptoms before shutting down though.

So I'm having it towed to my local BMW place. $159 diagnostic. Hopefully the SULEV warranty covers this.

Anyone encounter this issue before?

Needs fuel pump
Fuel pump control unit.
Coding for new pump.
ECU updates.
Valve cover.

$3851.50 total.

All covered under SULEV warranty.

They're also doing an oil change and brake fluid change.

Go me.

WTF, how was that so expensive? Your final bill was more than 10x the cost of a brand new Genuine BMW EKPS module! And why did they go anywhere near the valve cover?

The valve cover was cracked. Presumably, because the place I bought it from didn't do it right.

The valve cover alone was just shy of $1800.

The pump was $935, the control unit was $707. Plus programming for another $263.

My total out of pocket was $310 for an oil change and brake fluid change.

Lucky you. If you have the desire, the place, and intend on keeping the car for a while, try and learn to do oil change and brake flush yourself. Many of us can do those 2 things for well under $100.

I can do those things. This is my first BMW. But the last 4 cars I've had were Volvo and of those, the most recent is a 1994 940 turbo wagon. It needed a LOT of help. Struts, shocks, exhaust, head rebuild, brake pads, rotors, calipers, parking brake cables, AC. It's also the first Volvo I've owned that does NOT leak oil. And if you know older Volvos, you know they leak.

I still have that car. Just getting it ready for sale.

Is that for the aluminum or the composite?

Either way, BMW offered it installed for free, who was I to refuse?

None. No drivability issues, no warning lamp, nothing.

People need to not let the gas run down so low. Should fill up tanks more often when it is at least half a tank one should try to fill up. Also, use a top tier gasoline with a lot of detergents.
