1M headliner coming apart

So its been a long time, and since throughout ownership of my 1M and a member here wayyyyy back in 2011, I'm back and getting back to having fun, or lack there of lol My headliner is coming apart, liner is sagging. Took time today and took it apart, and ordered a new one from dealer. $850 for new one and parts number is not same as whats on the original. Will post pics for those that plan to removed and do it your self.

not hard taking the trim off to detached the headliner, just taking it off the car is more of a problem, may have to take the passenger seat off when installing the new one when it arrives.

By the way, new headliner parts number base on my 1M Vin number is 51-44-8045-117, so not the same as the pic of the parts above pic.

It will be interesting to see what it takes to get the new one in.

I absolutely hate bodywork and interior work. Props to you for tackling this. Have fun!

Damn. Damn. The German car curse I have that same issue on my 330i, GTI and now you say the 1M too?? This has been happening for 20 years at least you would think they would figure it out.

Thanks for sharing

Wow that could've been re upholstered for half the price. Where I live it can cost as low as $200USD. And if you DIY it & buy the cloth I'll be less expensive. And you'll be keeping the original part number. Not trying to be an ass or anything.

This is a 1M not a 10 year old 328... I get it but with that said, you can buy Alcantara in florida. Gulf fabrics sells it. Before you throw it away, you should see what it would cost to be done in alcantara? Looks like that one is made in Poland, maybe they have better glue than germany but it's possible that was made in 2011 and sat in a hot warehouse for 8 years (correction i see it was made in september 2014) and might not last 9 years now. That's why it would be interesting not just as a cost saving, but for reliability and coolness to have it done win alcantara. Just a thought.

Howdy Nacho,

I think this brings up the realities of owning an almost 10 year old car. Most of us, certainly including myself, consider our 1Ms to be both an enjoyable possession and to some extent, an investment. Many would like to keep the car in a condition that is as much "stock" as possible. My car is basically 100% stock, warts and all. But if my headliner goes, after reading this thread, I'd try to find someone to re-upholster it rather than buy a replacement part that is almost as old as my car, itself, for $800.

Anyone who would think that a 1M would be less valuable with a quality re-upholstering job done on the headliner, vs. putting in a 9 year old replacement part, is a nincompoop.

Its a car to enjoy, i didn't buy it for the collectible value, I did all my maintence and modified tastefully lol. It has its own character, and thats what I like about it, its not just another 1M, its my 1M, I'm not really worried about the value it would hold, I would worry how much I enjoy owning it, and already my kids calling dips on it. It will be pass down to the older kid lol When I'm done using the left foot.

Looks like your replacement is physically longer. Are they different group sizes? Is the replacement the one recommended by BMW (the dealer), or just one option that may fit?

Realoem lists three AGM options (each from East Penn):
61212353811 (70AH)
61212353812 (92AH)
61212353813 (80AH)

What kind of modification did you have to make to get it to fit?
