I don't think your gonna win this one. So they found a defect in the engine that is requiring the engine to be replaced. It could be something like a damaged valve that is requiring a full engine block replacement. Your getting a brand new engine to replace the defective one. Whether your mileage is 2500 or 49999, as long as its under warranty, all they are required to do is replace the defective part. Maybe they will go way way above and beyond and offer a new car, but I doubt it. My feeling is be happy that your getting it fixed while its under warranty. Seems a little snooty to me to think that just because you bought a BMW you should get a brand new car.

Absolutely. You must fight for a replacement - go straight to the BMW headquarters - there is no discussion. I hate to make this scarely, every major component of the car has gone through high QC; replacing a part means that , the particular replaced part may or may not be in the same batch that been QC. Thus, it could be less reliable ( I say it could be ). Sorry to hear this and it is indeed pretty bad.

I have to go with BMW on this one. The have the right to try to fix the car. I see no reason why they car will not be the same. The motor just makes it go. I have a much bigger problem witha car that was hit vs one that had the drive train replaced under warrenty.
Don't worry about Carfax, as far as I am concerned, Carfax is a joke. Search around on Ebay for "Clean Car Fax" an you will find more burned out, crashed, junk than you can shake a stick at. I would be real interested as to WHY the engine is bad. Did they give you an EXACT reason? |

We are all with you. Tough call for BMW. Engine is new so they replace with a new one. Hummm. Go for the new car. You have nothing to loose. But, if they stick with the new engine try for an extended warranty to 6 years and 100,000.
Good luck. Let us know what caused the engine failure. |

If they replace your engine, you should definitely negotiate a longer warranty at their expense, just in case. I think this would be very reasonable given that they need to replace a brand new major part of your car.

You are at the mercy of their generosity on this one. If they thought taking the engine apart to fix it was cheaper and would be equally effective then you woudn't even be getting a new engine. Most of the comments I'm reading here are emotional, and I understand that - I get real emotional about my car too. But if you've ever seen a car built (even a video of it) you'll realize that the car is not carved out of a solid block of iron like a statue. It is the assembled finished product of thousands of parts - the engine is one of those major components. Let them replace the engine.
I doesn't hurt to talk to them about your options and see what they might be willing to do... I think a new car is unlikely. They might agree to extend your warranty but there is really no reason to do that either. I would insist that they give you a loaner or rental the their expence until your car is finished.

You will NOT get a new car
Hundreds of engines are replaced early in the cars lives, most are caught at the VPC and the owners never even know about it. The engine is "plug and play" There is NO reason they should give you a new car. There is NO problem with having your engine changed This is NOT very uncommon for any car make Its just like having your clutch replaced. They just unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one. You will never know the difference, except that wou will have to run it in again. They do this rather than take you engine apart to find the problem, to make shure you have a 100% engine |

Let them replace the engine! Give them a chance to fix the problem, you might be pleasantly surprised at the good work they do. Be thankful that they are replacing the entire motor and not dismantling it. It’s not like you’d even be getting a refurbished motor seeing as the e90 has the newly designed motors. Sit down with the service manager and ask exactly what is wrong with your motor. Then talk with service and sales manager and ask if they will offer you an extended warranty as an internal goodwill gesture toward you. Insist on a decent loaner car and after the service is completed, be sure to take the car on an extended test drive with the service manager just to make sure you are completely happy. As LEDZEP said – cars are a compilation of 20,000 parts, let them replace this factory pre-assembled unit into your car. If you are not happy with the results or there are more problem, then talk to the dealership about a new car or your money back. They will be more receptive of your input after you have given them an opportunity to repair the issue.
Anyway- Good luck!

All you people screaming he needs to get a new car because it'll never be the same need to relax. This guy is already distraught over the problems with his car and no one is helping by making unfounded statements like this. Changing an engine is no big deal.

I think one of the things that cracks me up is that a lot of the people who yell "it will never be the same" after major repair are the same ones modding the shit out of their cars.

you people are crazy,
no dealer will give you a new car. Think for a second about what the hell they'd do with the repaired car. Dealers aren't in the business of giving away cars. you're lucky to just be getting a whole new engine, let them fix the problem and be on your way people who expect a new car or refund are the same kind of people who give BMW owners the reputation of being pricks let them fix the problem and be happy |

People are nuts. Take the new engine, say "thank you" and be on your way. If they said they were going to fix it, were you going to demand a new car? It's just a part. Take out the bad part, put in a new part and the car will be exactly the same. MUCH better than trying to fix an engine, which they would have been well within their rights to do.
You ain't getting a new car, nor should you. |

do robots drop the engine in at the factory? if so, id be a dick about it and have them send the car back to the factory and have the robots put the engine in, since thats the way the car was buil, but thats just because id wanna be a dick in this situation...on the other hand, if ur not a dick, u gotta understand that, they found the problem and are making the best effort to fix it, asking for a whole new car is asking alot...

Sting0923: You might be the extreme lucky one because of the broken engine. I have a friend who bought a Honda, and the engine was burnt in the first month. The company (Honda) ended up paying him 20 time the cars purchase price. I doubt BMWNA would do exactly the same but you should complaint to them.
