Loss of Boost - Check Engine - Limp Mode

I was passing someone yesterday on a two lane road when a heard a thump sound from the engine bay followed by a loss in power and a check engine light. Once I could pull over I shut off the car and restarted it. The check engine light went off and the car seemed to be running fine. However, when I tried to accelerate more than half throttle the car seemed to bog down and the check engine light came on again. I checked my Scan Gauge and had two codes. PI00 and PI02. I also went by O'Reillys and they ran their scan tool on the car and there were several stored codes including loss of turbo pressure.

I'm guessing there might be a problem with one of the turbos, but I can find any leaks or hoses that are disconnected. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a boost leak, see if the charge pipe broke off of the throttle body.

Welcome to the club.

Sounds like you blew off the charge pipe.

Thanks guys!

That's exactly what it is. Looks like a need a new charge pipe. The top has a chunk of plastic missing from one side.

Any recommendations for a replacement? I might as well upgrade the charge pipe.

Grenaded my stock charge pipe on its first shake down run after installing Cobb. I replaced it with a VRSF aluminum version and it's a nice piece of gear. I bought the version for the stock diverters and it works great. Got it from here, very good service and shipment.

Thanks N54Yankee. I've had a Dinan Stage 2 tune for years with no issues. And I was just looking at the VRSF charge pipe. Looks like a nice piece. I'll probably just order one as my car is down until I can replace the charge pipe. I removed the stock one this afternoon in preparation for a new one.

Some guys get longer times out of the stockers. I think the plastic gets more brittle over time, heat and cold and with the extra boost BOOM it finally lets go.

My car is a 2009 so I suppose the plastic and the boost finally wore it out. LOL!
And I certainly heard it when it when.

I ordered a VRSF charge pipe last night. It should be here on Wednesday.

After a little difficulty getting the TMAP sensor installed in the new charge pipe, the new charge pipe works great. And the quality of the VRSF charge pipe is first rate for the money.

Charge pipe

So I guess this is the famous charge pipe failure? My 135i will be 10 yrs old in October and has 75,000 miles. Is it true BMW will replace these for 10 yrs / 100,000 miles? I have a MHD stage 1 tune.

My charge pipe failed a few weeks ago on my 8 year old car with ~38,500 miles on it.

It sounded like a backfire and then just a moan if I gave it the gas. Fortunately I was only a mile from home and limped it in.

I put an aftermarket aluminum charge pipe on it an according to the traction control reaction going from first to second in sport + mode, I may have gained a few horses with the better charge pipe. It is much more intrusive in dialing power back on that shift now.

I also threw a CEL on the way home last nite with low boost pressure. My first thought was the aftermarket FMIC I had installed, so I pulled it off to take a look, but could not spot a problem. I also looked at what I could see of the charge pipe from the top without dismantling everything but couldn't spot any cracks or missing bits.

Do the factory blowoff valves ever fail or leak?

Car has ~80K with a Cobb tune...
