Well, the exhaust system itself has also a lot to do with sound, and that varies by model. Also, don't turbos also act as sort of a pre-silencer?

Based on the 325i, 328i and 330i I've tested so far, the N54 sounds much better (both in the 135i and 335i, but the 335i had the edge). Just my findings...

N54 sounds a lot nicer!
but when driving the 335 around the car seems to go quiet when not pushing it hard but still at decent revs . (butterfly valve?) it seems to have more of an aggressive sounds to it! also love the sound when you push the N54 when going up a hill. When you have the windows down all you hear are those turbos working! i love it!
