What did this guy do wrong?

I've been watching this video a bunch of times from the front page of Bimmerpost:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=972746

and I've been unable to reason through what he did wrong from a driving technique standpoint. Specifically, what should have done to avoid hitting the obstacle, and at what timepoint did this become apparent?

He makes that left turn, countersteers with throttle to continue the drift ... and then straightens out the front wheels ... maybe too early because the rear is still rotating?

Just curious to learn from those with more didactic drivers education and experience.

Yeah, no idea why he straightened the wheels as much as he did, but it looks like he tried to drive toward that tire.

If you watch the other video posted of before and after, he is decent at keeping the drift going (albeit sloppily...). I'm wondering if having 3 extra people in the car caused him to run out of skill faster.

He certainly steered it into the tire, the question is why.

I suspect he expected the car to snap back sooner than it did, likely due to the extra weight.
After it started to go wrong he was very slow with the wheel. This might have been because he lost some situational awareness and not realized where he was on course for a fraction of a second, perhaps due in part to distraction. I also wouldn't be surprised if his hand position meant he lost track of exactly which direction the wheels were pointing.

Either way he clearly shouldn't have been taking passengers at his skill level, and that was probably his fundamental mistake. There is a reason why many clubs to no allow passengers before you reach instructor level.

I saw this video too, not sure why he steered the way he did into the tire. The extra passengers must have played a gigantic role because he was easily adding 10% of the weight to the car and pretty much right over the rear axle. I think he would have been better off just going "2 all in" on the car (clutch and brake) and let go of the wheel.

Now on the other video from the Yonkers drift king. That guy is definitely talented, but no way in hell would I let him drift circles around my car.
