Track builds with upgraded turbos
I haven't run into any track build threads with upgraded turbos. I'm about to put on a set of pure stage 2 turbos, and was wondering if anyone that tracks their car pretty seriously runs the same kit, or another aftermarket kit? Have you run into any reliability issues?

Curious on this as well. I am in the middle of installing a PS2 setup on my car and will be tracking a few times this year.
I am looking forward to this. I found that my car was running out of steam up the long back straight at the track I go to. The dyno pulls show that this setup should be pushing harder further up the rev range.

Turbo's don't help you get around corners faster. Also, the larger the turbo the more lag you get when getting back on throttle in the straight away. It also makes it harder to modulate the throttle.
Basically, most people don't look at a turbo upgrade for road course use. A stock 135i is already capable enough (hp wise) to get around a track way faster than most people can handle. Seat time, safety, suspension, brakes, and tires are all better ways to spend money at a road course. Heat and traction would be my biggest concern when tracking with an upgraded turbo. 135i has a pretty short wheelbase and already struggles to put down 300-400whp coming out of a corner. The N54/N55 are pretty robust engines though that have proven to take abuse so long as the tune is solid. I will say that I tracked with someone with an upgraded turbo on their m235i and they had to de-tune it for future HPDE's due to cooling... They sure were fast in the straight away though... when the car was able to be ran hard that is... |
