Misfires - Wearing out Coilpacks and Spark Plugs
Hi all,
I've tracked 3 times with this car - and shortly after each track day I get misfires. If I'm lucky, it's just a spark plug or a few that needs replacing - and if I'm unlucky it's a few coilpacks. Any recommendations to help negate this? I'm mechanically uninclined, and there are enough YouTube videos that I've learned to change them on my own. Are the OEM Spark Plugs ill-favored over the "one step colder" NGK plugs on a tuned car? Dealer quotes $1000+ to replace coilpacks. Do I need to use Genuine BMW Coilpacks or am I OK using an Bosch?

According to realoem, the genuine BMW packs are made by Bosch. I track my car heavily and have used Bosch coilpacks with stock plugs. Never had any issues or misfires.
Rockauto has a whole set at about $26 bucks.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=12_1417 I bought my coil packs from OEMBimmerparts... BMW 1-Series Ignition Coil Kit By Eldor OEM "Newest Version" 12138657273 https://www.oembimmerparts.com/1-Ser...rts-s/2196.htm FCPEURO is also another good place to buy BMW parts from. Delphi coil packs... https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...12138616153kt1 Also... I would use only BMW dealer bought spark plugs. The aftermarket Bosch ones seem to have some quality problems. Many guys have had issues of misfires when using aftermarket Bosch plugs. The plugs that BMW sell are branded "BMW-Bosch", not just "Bosch" like the aftermarket ones. Here is the part number for N54 plugs... BOSCH ZGR6STE2 6@ bmw p/n 12120037244 Btw... I hope your changing your oil after each track event. Oil is cheaper than an engine. I made a DIY on how to change your spark plugs and coils. Its fairly easy to do. Should take less than an hour or two. I would also have a new pollen filter for the HVAC, since you have to remove that filter in order to get at the plastic fake valve cover to the coils/plugs. Dackel

Dealer quoted you 1000 dollars to replace the coil packs?!?!?!?!? Holy hell.
Good luck solving your misfire, depending how modded your car is going one step colder on plugs could be a good idea, but if the car is stock I'd recommend sticking with genuine BMW parts.

I just changed my spark plugs and coil packs and pollen filter yesterday. Took me two hours... mainy bc I was taking pics for the forum and in no real rush. I was also vacuuming the old leaves and crap down in the plug holes. I'll post my pics in the DIY spark plug thread soon.
Plugs cost me around 68 euros(for six at my local German dealer). New coils ran me $190 from Oembimmerparts.com and the pollen filter was around 26 euros. Not bad. Plus I know the job was done correctly and not hack up by a mechanic I don't know.

Check that the plugs connecting into the coil packs aren't just coming loose. I had a misfire, replaced plugs, then coil packs and it was fixed at first but then came back later the same day. Turns out the coil packs were fine and it was just the plug coming loose from the coil pack (it was cylinder 4, where it is a pretty tight fit between the top of the coil pack and the Vanos). I've also seen on other forums other people have had the same issue with the plug coming loose on cylinder 4.
Also doing plugs and coil packs is a very easy DIY. |

Are you tuned - I really think it's the COBB tune that's killing my sparkplugs/coilpacks...

Fuel issues also cause misfires.
Maybe you're chasing your tail for a problem that isn't what you think it is. Have you pulled any datalogs? |
