Budget for a year of racing

Hi guys,
I'm trying to figure out if I should invest in a e36 or use my 135i to start racing.

I'm trying to see what is a good number$ to expect for racing a 135i wheel to wheel. (Obviously you can't expect everything so I realized this is a real ballpark number)

Let me know if you need more information thanks!

Uhhhh.

Is the car even up to date and safety compliant with SCCA/NASA/Insert sanctioning body here regulations?

What class are you looking to race? A 135i will require a lot of work

I would go with e36. You will have to spend a lot of $$$ to make 135i competitive.

Here is your NASA ST2 point leader in the Northeast:

A tuned 135i would fall into ST2 classing and maybe even ST1 depending on how aggressive you get with the tune. Super touring class is no joke. Seems to be a class dominated by corvettes: http://timingscoring.drivenasa.com/N...by%20Class.pdf

The rest of the build can be whatever you want it to be... You'll need to replace every bushing in the car to start. 135i is an expensive build because of how soft it came off the factory floor. If you have money to wheel to wheel race you probably should just commit to whatever car you think you'll have more fun in...

I think another thing that should affect your decision here is which race classing is more popular in your region. I imagine things are more fun if you can actually find a lot of events to go to and ones that have a good number of cars. I haven't really looked into doing any wheel to wheel racing so I would like to know what you end up choosing.

What kind of racing? What series?

When people ask me about racing, the first thing I say, the cheapest part of racing is buying the car.

And at this point and older M3 and a higher mileage 135i cost about the same in price lol

Not sure why people perpetuate that a 135i would be too expensive to build. Anything you change on the 135i you'll be also 100% be just as likely to change on an older M3... The corvette on the other hand comes out of the box much more "ready to play" but for a significant difference in price over an older beat up ~$10-13k 135i lol. A used corvette will cost you more than a fully prepped 135i.

There's so many things that factor into this; how many events, what tire is class legal, distance to races/accommodations at the events, entry fees, bringing any 'crew' with, tools/spares, are you driving to the events or towing, ect.

Fairly safe bet is to plan for a set of front pads/rotors per event and a set of tires. Don't forget that current safety equipment adds up in a hurry and isn't a good place to save money.

Having built both a Mod class E30 and an E46 we ran at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill for a few years, my recommendation is to figure out the class you want to run in and build the car for that. Read the rules then read them again. For a typical build, I would plan on $15-$20K once you acquire the car (without labor to install the go-fast parts), and plan on at least $2,000 per weekend. $1K alone for tires and then you have entry fees, brakes, hotel, tow vehicle fuel, meals, etc.

My partner and I have just started a new 128i build and I spent the day stripping the interior.

There are a ton of classes... BMW CCA has a class for every car and level of prep (within their rules). NASA has PT, but I don't know that it would be competitive there, SCCA has something I'm sure. There is always GTS and I'm sure that USTCC would homologate one if they were asked.

Hi,

No thread on the build yet. Some early pics on our Facebook page (HQAutosport Racing).

The interior is out, wire harness mostly thinned, fuel tank removed, 6 speed swap almost done (waiting for the drive shaft to come back from the shop that is stretching it but the tranny & pedals installed). Very little externally to see yet.

When I raced with a friend of mine in SCCA's ITB in the North East... we always spent about $1K for the weekend of racing. That's not including the mechanical wear and tear on the car. Just food, gas lodging, track fee's etc.

Then afterwards the car would need servicing and parts $$$.

Also... How many races per year do you expect to be running>? What about crashes/repairs? It all adds up $$$$
