How much for an oil change?
My wife's 2011 128i is due for an oil change (maintenance program just expired). BMW of Alexandria (VA) quoted me $210 for just the oil & filter change, nothing else. How much has everyone else paid?

I would say $140 sounds better. Oil changes are not difficult, Bav Auto probably has a video on it. From them, oil would be max $55 and the filter is $7.15. Walmart often has Mobile 1 (0W 40 or Castrol 5W 40 I think, in any case it should show BMW approval LL01 on the back) on sale, 5 qts for as cheap as $23 (you need 6.8 qts. ) NEVER buy your oil filter for BMW from Walmart. If you intend on keeping the BMW for a while, consider joining BMWCCA and then you may locate another member who would most likely help you out. Baring all of this, there must be a good indy BMW garage not too far away from you.

cost me $70 at my local mountain view/goodyear. Manager is a buddy of mine so they gave me a few bucks off but not much since most of the cost is the oil.

Most dealers charge between $120 to $240. Try using (or asking) for a coupon or BMWCCA discount. IF you pay less than $150 your doing good.
That all said... yea... I do all my oil changes myself. Where there is a will, one finds a way! Condo and all

Check the service specials as well on the websites of your other local dealers, too, especially since BMW of Alexandria accepts others' coupons and doesn't seem to be offering an oil change one themselves right now. You can use coupons for e90/e92s, too, which is normally what's listed on the dealers' websites as that's what I did. So, it ended up being $79.95 at my local dealer.

My dealer and the indys around me charge around $80-100. I buy Euro oil on closeout (also, Walmart Castrol 0W-40 for $21.66/5Q) and the local Advance lets me substitute Mann filters on their oil specials, so I can do my own oil changes for around $35-45.

Mine accepted it because I said, it's the same (damn) engine, and voila, total was like $84 for my post break-in oil change. =) Almost the same price as had I bought the oil and filter myself.

Although, still better than dropping my car off for it's included maintenance, and supply my own oil.
Because I supplied my own oil, they charged me $100 for the oil change, instead of it being free. |

What? They charge you if you supply the oil, otherwise it is free? That makes no sense at all.

Hey Gang,
I searched, but can't find it. What is the proper Mobil 1 oil type/weight, and amount for a 2013 135i? Also, anyone know the best filter to use? My (trusted) mechanic is going to do the work, but I want to make sure they use the correct oil and filter. Thanks!

Go to Passport BMW, they usually have a 79 special on their website.

I change my own since my "free" maintenance period is over. I got annual oil changes since I don't drive mine every day. It was around 7,000 miles per oil change so not too bad. I use Mobil 1 0-40W European formula from Walmart and a Mann oil filter I order from Amazon (get several at once to save on shipping). Works out to around $40/oil change. I do it every 5,000 miles, mainly because it is easy to remember.
The only challenging thing about changing the oil is getting the car in the air so you can reach the drain plug. If you can do that, you can change it. I do it in the driveway because my wife believes garages are for storage and my funnel fell over once dumping the old oil in a 5 gallon polyurethane can I use for temporary storage before recycling. Made a mess so I just do it in the driveway to avoid a fight. I have a big piece of cardboard I throw down to protect the driveway and me. Very doable in a condo if you have a jack and stand and other "stuff". A filter wrench is also a good idea although it could be done with pliers (big ones) or a plier type oil filter wrench.

Holy frick that's robbery. Sharpe BMW of Grand Rapids charges $90 for changing with the BMW branded Shell oil change and filter. Kinda funny because I'm such a cheap bastard that I buy the oil and filter to take home and change it myself to save a measly $12.
This is the best deal I've heard of any BMW dealer doing the oil change for. |
