This is bugging me...if its an E46 block then how is it only 3 liters?

Is an E46 330Ci block and not an M3 block?

To OP: sorry to hear about the mishap past weekend on a slippery road (broken steering column after hitting a tree stump, steering off the 1M into a ditch).
