Anyone else having second thoughts due to the new software

updates that seem to induce considerable lag below 3000 RPM? It's a big topic on E90.

I love the low end torque of the 335, and for BMW to introduce this turbo lag in pretty ridiculous.

It probably won't be as big a topic here since most cars will have the new software and people will just think it's the way the car is.

I avoid turbo lag by ordering a 128i. Boooooo small engine.

I've been reading a lot about this. I'm going to be honest and say I don't feel it. My turbos are definitely kicking in b4 3k.

Here's the most recent link going over how the new software doesn't fix the problem that was introduced with 29.2

I can run my car down below 1000rpm in 6th gear and still pull away smoothly, by about 1300-1400 rpm it's a hard push in the back from then on.

Hopefully this ECU flash doesn't apply to the 135i

This really does provide some valuable info. This is why Dinan is a good choice IMO. They work hand in hand with BMW development, have extensive R&D, and are willing to put a warranty with their product. A far cry for a black box with a few resistors in it.

The safest route is likely the Riss DP.

I'm more concerned with boost leaks. If the small turbos really are already running at 90% capacity a small boost leak could cause them to overspin and self destruct.

Just WOW on the $26K.

But the thing I don't understand is why he didn't look for a salvage motor to swap out. The very first hit I got on a google search found a lightly damaged but driveable 335i with 18000 miles for $21K. Surely it would have made sense to do an engine swap then part out the rest of the car to make up some of the rest.

Definately a + for Dinan or BMW if they ever come out w/ their own Flash .... Might make a little less power, but the warrenty coverage is pretty much worth it ..

The turbo lag is caused by the changes the bmw made to the wastegate duty cycle at low engine loads, or cruise, idle to address wastegate rattling.

Basically when the N54 was released, several people noticed that the wastegates on this car were normally CLOSED, meaning that as soon as you hit the gas, you were already spinning the turbines. BMW made a change in the march 2008 software to address the issue with rattling wastegates, so now the wastegate stays open, and has to close first before boost can build... this is the lag. The wastegate being open also causes the car to sound louder, and more "burbley" at idle/cruise...

I am flat out refusing all software updates of any kind until this issue is resolved. It IS a real issue, and there have been hundreds of complaints. Some dealers have even removed the new software from their computers because of complaints.

^^^

I think it's really stupid that they have put lag "back in" One of the biggest praise of the new engine was that there was no lag - in fact, no lag is the goal of any turbo engine....now I'm starting to wonder about getting the 135....but nothing else out there really has my blood going either (not at this price range). Why BMW why? Engine of the year my ass...haha

So is the best fix for the time being to just install the RR DPs?

So your basically gonna have to get a Tune to undo what BMW has done if you want the vehicle to perform pre 29.2?
