BMW's tuning detection rolled out in March, 2008. By April, 2008 the major tuners had already developed a work-around to keep the tunes undetectable. The people that make the SSTT are not major players and simply didn't do enough to prevent the codes when mixed with aftermarket exhaust and intakes. Having said that anyone can delete their own codes before going in to the dealer using a GT1. You just have to be slightly smarter than the dealer here and that is not a very high hurdle to get over.

I wanna be smarter than the dealer! Are you selling the GT1? Can I buy one from you, please? 8 posts, and almost all of them plugging this device, even after the mods warned you.

You must be selling them?
Or is this just an attempt to be "fastest banned"?

He probably stole one from a dealership, which is where most of the ones you see on eBay come from.

hrmm, I wonder if the codes are just an extended OBD2 codes, and if so, how hard would it be to build something that just reset it...

No, the tampering code is set from too much airflow it seems. I'm thinking that a combination of the SSTT, catless DPs, and driving the car hard at higher altitudes is what did it.

The SSTT takes advantage of some overhead BMW built into the car for use above sea level. I was using that up, then went to up to the mountains and the ECU wanted a little too much, and the code was set.

BMW has it figured out that the car needs a certain amount of air for a given amount of boost in a worst case scenario. I think the SSTT tricks the system into thinking it's at a lower boost level than it actually is, so the bypass valves close more to bring it back where it should be. This makes the car haul ass, but it they're also watching the airflow coming in, and know when enough is enough. Once it's exceeded that level, they set the manipulation code.

Some of this is speculation on my part. Take it for what it's worth.

Seriously? Give me a break. Do you think the dealer considered my position before they tried to "deceive me" with a higher money factor than I was willing to pay? Luckily I caught it. Or when they "deceive" people into thinking they're getting a good deal when they're really rolling the trade in and making money on that?

It's all a big game, everyone wants to end up on top. Unfortunately this guy got beat this time around....hopefully he'll win the next time around.

I could've sworn that I read in a previous thread a few months back that SOME stealerships were actually SELLING the SSTT. Anyone else remember that?

Honestly, it was just a matter of time. This is EXACTLY the reason im not sitting in a 135 right now. Im very interested to see where you will go with your car when you need to get the pump replaced. Keep us informed.

I've seen a lot of folks say this isn't fair. Yet, why should BMW be financially accountable for your mods? They purposely run the car in a certain tune to make it more reliable. When you install mods then try to hide it you are being dishonest and trying to cheat them. You make an informed choice when you mod your car and you know that it may, and often does, void the warranty. Be accountable for your actions.

And Riss Racing and everyone else who sells mods has an obligation to explicitly state how their products may impact warranties *before* the sale. If they are not doing this then why are they allowed to advertise here?

You are missing the point. I'm am not defending anyone. We are not going to turn 1addicts into the How-To for dealership deception or any other activity! Period. This has nothing to do with jeremyc74's current situation.

I'll be replacing the pump myself. I do all my own work. The only thing I won't tackle these days is a transmission. I've done those in the past, but there's a lot of special equipment required to really do it right, and it's better left to a specialist.

The reason it isn't fair is that the mods didn't cause the failure. It was present before any mods were done, and BMW can tell that.

Ok, so then what IS your point? Should we also not tell people how to get the best deal when going in to negotiate for fear that the dealer won't make enough money off of us? This is an open forum (or so I thought) to discuss experiences had and suggestions for others. I'd understand if he was doing something illegal, but not allowing others to talk about warranty work is pushing it.

I think your attitude on this is exemplary in general and I know you are a reasonable individual, but if you were suddenly extracted from this and were looking in from the outside, what should the process and policy be? It is intuitively obvious that a down pipe doesn't impact a rear view mirror. Other things are less obvious (though we all know in this forum that there is a very high probability that BMW fuel pumps have issues). Who decides? If it's the BMW service manager, is this individual going to be impartial?

+1

We have threads on:
  • Deceiving the police regarding front license plates (use double sided tape for ticket sign-off, then promptly remove)
  • Deceiving the DMV, police, etc. on emission laws (see ads for O2 Simulators)
  • Avoiding speeding tickets (see radar detectors, illegal is some states)
  • And others.
I can't see how a discussion on warrenty work is worse than the above....there's nothing illegal about removing codes from YOUR car. :iono:

I have to say though, this is the best forum I've ever been on. A bit over moderated perhaps when it comes to dealers.
