What to replace as preventative maintenance

I have a '08 128i with 80,000 miles. Other than oil changes, new battery, brakes, shocks and a new AC compressor, everything on the car is factory original parts. I'm not looking for upgrades, but rather just looking for suggestions on parts that are likely to fail soon. I'd rather replace stuff on a proactive basis. Should I replace the accessory belt, coolant hoses? Any suggestions are appreciated.

You didn't mention water pump, so get after it cuz that's the mother of all preventative maintenance items. Also thermostat and the U-shaped hose while you're in there.

Do the accessory belt and tensioner, differential oil, trans oil or fluid, brake fluid, and replace spark plugs. Replace air and cabin filters. Check carefully for engine oil leaks. Oil filter housing gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gaskets are all notorious for leaks.

Forgot to mention that I did replace spark plugs, filters (air/cabin) and various other fluids (like brake fluid). I will get on replacing the water pump, thermostat, U-hose, accessory belt and tensioner.

Thanks. Other suggestions welcome

EH sounds good, def check for oil leaking around the oil filter housing and change out the power steering fluid and maybe the reservoir, its pretty cheap. Before any modding make sure the car is mechanically sound and leak free.

YMMV

GP's Maintenance Sched:
* Oil: 0w-40 or 5w-40 (LL-01)
* Oil change: every 5-7,500 mi. (BMW says 12-15k or annually (oil is cheap & engines are expensive)
* Cabin air filter: 1-2 yr / 15k mi
* Air filter: 2 yrs / 30k mi.
* Brake fluid: 2 yrs / 30k mi.
* Steering fluid: 2 yrs / 30k mi.
* Coolant flush: 3 yrs / 36k mi.
* Water pump & T-stat @ 60k (optional - tends to fail +/- 60k)
* Spark plugs: n55 & 60k, or n54/n55 w/ tune @ 45k mi.
* Differential/DCT/trans fluid: 60-70k mi.
* Belts/hoses: as needed or 100k (Typically belts changed earlier due to OFHG leaks)
* Fuel filter: 100k (in fuel tank)
* 02 Sensors: 120k or when fail.

Everyone already covered everything in this thread.

With the exception of serviceable items (Belt, tensioner, roller, plugs, oil, filters, fluids, brakes etc) the only items i can think of for the N52 engine are:

- Water pump + Thermostat (they last a lot longer on NA cars than turbo cars).

- Oil filter housing gasket (common leak).

- Valve cover gasket (common leak).

- Clean/Replace Vanos sensors (two sensors at the front of the engine, one for intake and one for exhaust).

You may come across the odd/rare issue and require front wheel bearings, oil pan gasket and a few leaks with the power steering system (if you do not have the servotronic option), maybe the AC needs a recharge or check etc

There is a user who replaced all the coolant hoses a few years ago, and said it was not worth the effort.

Change out the Rad fluid, keeping it fresh will prevent overheating and other problems from happening for sure....

I don't know why nobody mentioning suspension.

It is time for struts, shocks, tension struts, and wishbones.

I drive E88 with M Sport Suspension. My struts were leaking at 98,000miles/8yr, but my rear shocks weren't in really bad condition.

Well, is it really considered maintenance? I mean sure if one damper is bad, replace all including gaskets, mounts, bushings etc.

I was thinking, asides from the usual fluids, filters, plugs and belts, the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket fall into this category.

I guess answering the thread and talking about preventative maintenance with 80,000miles , and what is likely to fall then yes they are.

In that case, replace "everything" except the engine and transmission.

Likelihood of all the hoses, radiator, bushings, suspension, front and rear control arms, clutch etx will also fall into the category, depending on the PO of the vehicle and how it was driven.

My point being, is that the list can grow dramatically, costs will be staggering and end of the day just going to be like any other used car with 80,000 miles.

What i intended was to be a bit more specific with our cars, the "common" preventative maintenance (such as the known OFHG and valve cover gaskets).

Did not intend to start anything...offensive.

The eccentric shaft sensor is apparently another common part to fail around the 70k mile mark. Replacing it requires removing the valve cover which, because it's plastic, is recommended to be replaced as well. I did not replace mine, only the gasket. Wha are people's opinions on replacing vs. reusing the valve cover?

Considering what it costs, I reused mine... are people really adding $600 to the cost of a valve cover gasket job just for fun?

It's a BMW forum. Yes.

I replaced mine because it was cracked, which is nice so the PCV stuff is new.

Just inspect it thoroughly and make the call yourself. Unless it's warped or cracked, don't bother.
