Air Bag Replacement

Need answers from somebody smarter than me.

Had airbag recall performed a few months ago by the dealer. Yesterday I am playing around with back of steering wheel and I notice that the holes used to release airbag module are still covered by vinyl.

Is there another way to release module without opening up those holes? Or did the dealer just tell me they changed it? Or did the recall include a new vinyl piece on the back of the steering wheel when the bag was replaced?

Thanks

I'd check with your dealer again. In my case, I had pierced the vinyl area you're talking about to install the Nelson Racing Wheel paddle kit. Having gone in there myself, I don't see anyway anyone can replace the airbag without going through the two holes in the back to release the airbag.

It can also be similar to my situation. I had my car in the dealership for some other work and also said my car was due for the airbag replacement. My SA even noted it on the workorder. When I picked up my car, the final receipt/workorder did not show anything about the air bag. I asked my SA about this and he checked in his system. And yes, for some reason the mechanic didn't do the air bag replacement. I had to go back to get the airbag done.

Mine was done a few weeks ago. They definitely went through the back of the steering wheel cover but used very thin tools. The holes have pretty much sealed themselves again.

The signs that it has been replaced are a new horn cover with new roundel.

OP, you can have your dealer check their records because I believe BMW requires the old airbag and new airbag serial numbers to be logged in order to file the claim. Not sure if they were doing this from the beginning of this recall, though.

Esteban;
Interesting information there. My replacement took place late last year so numbers should be there.
