New Steering Wheel in the mail - high hopes!

So I found a guy on ebay who was selling an Alcantara re-covered E82/E9X sport steering wheel with a red "performance" stripe on the top and tri-coloured stitching. It included the wheel, center trim, and multifunction buttons. I contacted him and said I was intereseted in his wheel for my 1M, but too bad it had a red stripe, not orange. He responed with, "I can custom make the stripe any colour you want if you can wait 4 days". Then I also asked him if he could do orange stiching if he was custom making it, to which he responed with, "sure!".

The best part is the price - alcantara wheel, alcantara center trim and multifunction buttons for $350 including shipping to me in Houston. I realize I will need to change out the buttons, but hopefully I can re-sell those.

The wheel is currently in the mail from Latvia , but he sent two pictures of it before he shipped it. I have high hopes that it will look as good in person.

Main concern is the thickness. Looks thinner than our stock steering wheel. But it does look good on pics. Let us know how it goes.

I will take measurements when it comes to see how it compares to stock. It looks thicker in the first picture than in the second. But for $350 custom colour/stitched delivered to my door, I figured I would give it a try.

I would prefer a thinner wheel. The std 1M wheel is too thick.

Have you got little girlie hands? That's what makes our cars such a joy to drive.

Joking aside, other than the looks, I doubt (very) thick steering wheel contributes anything positive for performance driving, there have been lots of people in the past complaining about the extra thickness of the M3/1M steering wheels and most automotive journal reviews mentioned that as a downside too.

BMW's own Performance Wheel is a tad slimmer than stock leather wheel and I think it really feels better.

I have normal hands but looking at them now just to be accurate, indeed they are not too big or hairy

For real? That's one of the best things on this car is how thick the steering wheel is.

Nope. And I disagree. Read other reviews and I am not the only one who thinks this. My Audi and early model Gallardo had the best steering wheels. BMW have always got them wrong.

I will measure when it gets here, but looking at the wheel in my 1M compared to this one, I am not convinced its thinner. Time will tell for sure. Hard to tell from these pics:

based on my views, it looked like the normal 3 series standard steering wheel i had on my 330i, but yeah guess time will tell,
love the alcantara, did not manage myself to be committed keeping it clean so staying away for now.

It definately was thinner when it arrived, so I sent it back and they are going to make it thicker. I will update the post when I get it back
