Most guys recommend oil changes every 5k kays (instead of every 10-15k kays) with a high quality full synthetic. Most guys I have spoken to with FBO's run a mixture of 5W30, 0W40 or 0W30.
Actually, for our 1ers (the N54 anyway), the condition based service interval between oil changes actually varies from 25,000km to 35,000kms depending on the number of kilometres on the car.

Whilst I'm sure that it wouldn't kill your engine using those indicators I'd prefer to err on the safe side and do it every 10,000. 5,000 is a bit too frequent IMO unless you drive in really harsh conditions.

I have always changed my cars oil once a year or 15k kays (they have all been jap NA cars)

I can understand your logic of 5k kays is too frequent, but for the sake of $60 and 30 mins time I will do mine every 6 months

A bit of preventative maintenance never hurt anyone.

I've always changed the oil on my previous cars every 5,000 ks. What's a few dollars in new oil compared to the thousands and headaches it will save you in the long run.

Mind you that equates to about a year's usage for me.

In addition, I believe there's also the fact that 1st gear is so short you never feel the 'kick' like in 2nd or 3rd. You're past the 2,000rpm barrier way too soon to really feel anything. 2nd is a lot longer so you can more easily feel the pull.

Just from my car though, it seems to only hit 12psi in first gear, and only 15psi on the latter part of 2nd.
