At risk of straying off topic has anyone bought a car OS, say the UK, ( specifically an older car as I have in mind an E9 CSi ), toured in it and brought it back. I am very keen to hear what process was involved, how much it cost and if on balance it was worth it? I'll be in the UK in July, hoping to take in Goodwood for their 20th anniversary while we are there plus looking around at classic car prospects.

There was an article in the latest BMW Victoria Car Club magazine on someone bringing back their 3 series and the paperwork and process involved. Might not be a classic car but a good start i supposed. The latest magazine is yet to be published online (http://www.bmwccv.com.au/magazine/)

Awesome idea! I would love to take my 1M around Europe . . the ring, Goodwood revival or festival of speed, etc.

Imagine the memories!!!

I read that article, it was quite interesting. I think in summary it was only just worth it.
Seemed like a lot of effort with a small margin at the end.

I'm interested to hear how much to ship Vader to the UK, if you don't mind sharing Jon. I think it's a great idea, I always miss my car when I travel and can't wait to get back in it. Even if a rental is the worlds fastest car!

Noice, but i am here for business and just needed something to get me from paris to frankfurt straight away via some companies on the way, last year at CDG airport there was a rental panamera GTS, silly money however, fancy rentals don't make alot of sense

Unless it's under SEVS (uncommon/not aus delivered cars)... if you want it STREET REGISTERABLE, as far as i've investigated (i've been looking into it for the GF's next car), the only option is personal import, which requires full 1-year ownership.

for a car that old, though, a registration through a car club... i can't remember the exact name, but you only are allowed to drive it a certain distance per year, is also available.

Awesome Alpine - go for it. Whilst you there let me know how much it cost too. I have been thinking about sending mine to a few specialists in UK and Sweden for some improvements. . I thought it is way more than just a few k?

this is the most mental thing i've ever heard... you might even be cheaper to just buy a nice car over there man.... lol 10k pounds for a 2006 E46 M3.... i think the novelty of it all and the memories... my heart would say yes my head would say no.

now that i think about it... there is few more issues... your car would be exposed to grit/salt on the road, car's dont have a long life span in europe due to the corrosion from the roads.

Btw I don't think you would be allowed John because you lease the car. If you owned it outright then no problem. I think that is the case anyway.

That purple SV is so ugly! It is a sin compared to my mate's SV here in Melbourne.

Do it!! Just CARNET the vehicle - there and back - I looked into this option in 2011 when I contemplated shipping out one of my 2002s for the Bavaria Tour 2011 but ended up navigating for a UK forum member - IIRC was around $6k for shipping/customs/quarantine - no duty payable as the car was sold in Australia.

And going OT :

Any car made before 1988 is easy to import i.e. 25 years and older - just does NOT have to be on SEVS. I just brought in an E28 M5 from NZ - 1987 South African built! All u need is import approval B4 the car ships, and then pay duty on purchase price and GST on purchase price + shipping costs!

as younger than 25 years old then it needs to be on the SEVS and on top of that u have to get a RAWS (Regd approved Workshop) to get it complianced etc.

Cars younger than 25 years old can come in without RAWS/SEVS as long as you have owned the car for more than 12 months - personal import - exempt from import duty and GST if I'm not mistaken.

As for club rego - different states have different laws - in Vic - car has to be 25+ years old - can opt for either 45 days or 90 days driving a year with log book. In SA - car needs to be built on or before 1/1/1979 and it's 90 days of driving with a log book. Not sure what the rules are in other states.
