Installed a Mio C728 sat nav in OEM flip up display

Hey guys,

first posting, but I want to share the information with you

The last days I installed a Mio C728 7" sat nav in the OEM flap up monitor. There was a bunch of stuff to do such as running all cables through the holes and plugs and connect everything in the car. The best thing is that I kept the original curcuit board so the flap up monitor will open and close automatically with the ignition/turn off.

The Mio comes with dvb-t decoder, mp3-, video-player and photo-album and as you recon the Miomap navigation software What a surprise

this is the result:

Pic during installation:

Pic of the electric board sandwich

bad pic @night:

It cost me less than 400,- Euros, to be exact:

Mio sat nav : 290,- €
BMW case/flip up (from ebay) : 67,- €
8GB SD Card : 20,- €
cables & wiring : 12,- €
__________________________
total: 389,- €

glad for comments
cheers Flo

Looking good. Is there any way to use RCA's with the Mio unit instead of AUX?

Hey,

thank you. Well where do you want to plug it in? It won't be a problem to use a jack-rca converter.

Is it touch screen only? If so then I'd so you should've put it in the center console area instead of the dash, kind of a reach. But other than that, looks like a flawless job. Have fun with it.

hey, thanks

yes it is touchscreen only - you're right about the reach but I kind of like it and once you're driving you don't mess around with that thing. So it's no prob at all.

Hey

well I can give you some advice but you're the one who needs to do the job. A bit of experience (in electronics) would help :P

mcflow, how did you make the screen to flip up once you start the car and flip down when you switch it off?
How did you connect the motor?

Cheers!

Wow that looks great!

Good job on the install McFlow.

I've not seem the Mio before, are they able to play movies on any of the other models in the range, I'm not bothered about TV just being able to play stuff off the SD Card?

Thanks

Hey man!

Looks really neat! Nice work!

Just a few questions if you don't mind!

1) Will you lose the AUX port by doing this?

2) Is it fully reversible

3) How do you get it to flip up and down automatically on ignition? Does the circuit that does this come with the flip up case from eBay?

Thanks

Well I installed an 8GB SD Card and there is no problem at all playing *.avi's, *.mpeg's, mp3's. It also has a slide-show option for pictures.

Thats really hard to tell, but I think it took 30h all in all including stripping the cases, modify, install and finishing.

No problem at all

1.) No since I plugged the audio cables of the Mio in on the back of the radio plug, so it's possible to plug an mp3-player into the Aux-In while watching a video or do something else with the sat nav

2.) It's fully reversible

Now the answer for the motorization

I connected the BMW flip up at the back of the radio plug

flip up plug: -> radio plug

pin 1 : terminal 30 (plus) -> Radio = pin 15 (red/green - thick cable)
pin 3 : terminal 31 (minus) -> Radio = pin 12 (brown - thick cable)
pin 5 : K_CAN High -> Radio = pin 11 (orange/green)
pin 6 : K_CAN Low -> Radio = pin 9 (green)

The original flip-up comes with the curcuit board and 2 cables running through the hole on the left side in the housing.

http://img269.imageshack.us/i/p1010726b.jpg/

You need the cables on the left side. One goes in on the electric board, the other comes from the electric board to the motor. You'll need to wire the end outside the case up:

The plug looks like this:

http://up.picr.de/2164802.jpg

You will need to buy the left parts from the BMW dealer...

That's the plug that needs to be connected: http://img199.imageshack.us/i/p1010735.jpg/ (its not my finger )

part numbers:

61 13 6909058 plug for the cable on the 2nd picture
61 13 0006663 contacts for the terminals to go from the plug to the radio

total = 6 €

You can see the plugs stick together right here with the pins number 1,3,5 and 6:

I hope I could give you some good answers
cheers Flo

Thanks for the response!

Man I'm really keen for this!! Only thing is, apart from the financing (i'm only 18 and not working yet lol), that i'm too much of an electrical noob! Quite scary..

And i'm wondering if the Mio has maps for South Africa. For some reason i think only maps for Europe are available. :/

So how are you liking it? How is the navigation of the Mio and the overall feel/responsiveness of the touch screen?

EDIT: Seems i'm mistaken - http://www.webantics.co.za/viewItem.aspx?idProduct=2012
