New '12 128i E88 owner! Noob Question
Hi there - well after a long hiatus, and my mid-life crisis, I am now the proud owner of a 2012 128i E88 N52 MT! (96k)
I always wanted a convertible - and most of all always wanted to learn driving MT. Anyways, I think I may have made a mistake with my oil change. I purchased Pennzoil Platinum Euro L Oil - 5w30. However, I guess I forgot the difference between LL04 vs LL01. The Oil I got is LL04 approved. Question - I only plan on driving this car during Spring-Summer-Early fall months. Am I risking any damage to my engine? or can I wait till next year and do another oil change? I expect I might drive the car now at least 5k KMs more before putting it into storage. I've read a lot of posts - but cannot get a clear answer. Please don't blast me havn't posted in these forums for a very very long time. Appreciate any feedback on this. Considering spending the $$$ on getting another oil change if the above oil will hurt the engine. Last edited by BavFan_08; 11-05-2020 at 09:20 AM.. |

In Europe it is approved for Gasoline and Diesel engines. It has more detergents in it since it is approved for diesels. I was running LL04 in my BMW when I was stationed in Germany. When I shipped the car over to the United States I still had fresh LL04 oil in the engine that I did not change until 6,000 miles later. No damage done to the engine. Supposedly it was an issue a few years back when US gasoline had higher sulfur concentrations in the gas and it was creating issues with the oil. US gas has relatively low sulfur levels now and you should be fine until the next oil change.
If diesel oil was a really big issue, the people who run Shell Rotella religiously in the N54 and N55s would have had a lot more issues at this point. |

That is awesome you are learning MT at that point in your life, do you feel like you have missed out for 20+ years now?

The complete opposite has happened. I am absolutely loving the engagement with the car. I feel now driving is more worth while than it ever was. It is no longer the "chore" it once was. Will definitely post a pic. Sorry was away due to being busy and picking up a cold. Getting a cold through covid sucks (for obvious reasons.) Not Covid positive btw. |

Seriously consider joining Trillium Chapter, BMWCCA. They will help you find a very good BMW indy garage-critical to enjoying for car for a long time.

Essentially the club will always be a GTA club whether affiliated with BMWCCA or BMW Clubs Canada. They are a very large and well organized club.

The problem is a lot of people join because after a "year" or so, you get discount on BMW's, new (not sure on pre-owned) that only comes down from BMWCCA as opposed to any independent clubs.
I think also being affiliated to BMWCCA, is you get a lot of punching power. |

Very nice! LOVE those wheels.
Very much agree with everyone else, don't sweat the oil. If you are just going to use it summers and change the oil annually, it really doesn't make any difference as long as it is a good synthetic of the correct viscosity.
