128i owners with 17in wheels, are you able to fit in 245s?

As the title said, I’ve acquired 17x8.5 ET40 wheels and was wondering if anyone has fit 245/40 section tires square? If it helps, I have Ohlins suspension with fixed camber plates set slightly lower than oem height. Front camber set at -2.3 and rear at -1.8.

My apologies if this was asked but can’t find it through search for the life of me.

Yes.

17x8.5 et40 Apex ARC-8 with 245/40-17 RE71Rs and the same camber you are running with Koni yellow/eibach pro-kit.

They fit without rolling my fenders but on big dips on the highway the rears would rub at full compression. I did end up rolling the fenders just so I wouldn't need to worry about the potential rub at track days.

Thanks for the response. I track my car but have only ever used 225/45 square on stock 17in 207Ms. I’m concerned about the fronts not clearing the Öhlins strut due to the taller 40 section tire but hopefully the camber provided by the plates and current alignment will allow me to do so. The rears, yeah I agree with the potential rub. I don’t think my car has rolled fenders from the PO. I spoke with b1aze about this as he has rolled fenders on his 128i to address this issue.

Just wider.

225/45-17 = Ø24.9724

245/40-17 = Ø24.7165

Thanks for the informative response. I’m assuming these pertain to height? I know the next size up which are 235 section tires have negligible width difference compared to a 225, making it pointless in a way. The only way is to jump to the 245s. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, height/diameter.

I don't know "only way", but I'm going 245/40 when I've worn out the 225/45. I've done the 130i hub mod, so I anticipate no rubbing.

Thanks. I agree, the hub mod looks more and more enticing. I’m only intimidated by the amount of work involved as I don’t have much space to work in. I appreciate the input mate!

I actually have a set of 17x8.5 et40 apex arc 8's on the way along with ohlins r&t and already have dinan fixed camber plates along with m3 control arms up front and was wondering if you were able to test fit 245 40 17s square without any issues. Also if you have pictures that would helpful too since for whatever reason no one likes to post pictures of their 17s

Not yet as I’m wary of buying the set of four 245/40s if in the end it will not work w my suspension.

Do you want a square setup for rotational purposes? I’m in the same boat and I’ve been thinking about ordering two 245/40/17 tires and testing them on the front. If I can’t make them fit, I’ll put them in the rear and get 235/45/17 for the front. Depending on the tire, you can get slightly more tread width than the 225. The diameter difference should be negligible and I would think the handling would be close to neutral. Unfortunately you’re on a 40mm offset so you can’t do much for fender rub. With 45mm offset, at least I can add a spacer to get me off the strut and hopefully not rub the fender.

245 and 255's clear (quite easily) with stock suspension, or something like Koni Yellows w/ lowering springs or B8's w/ lowering springs. Clearance becomes more of an issue when you go to coilover that has a linear spring, especially if it uses a helper spring as well. With that being said you still can fit 245 and 255 with coilovers with the correct offset wheels + spacers.

~5mm of clearance between the widest part of the tire from the strut/spring is plenty. I've seen plenty of posts of people having issues fitting wider tires, but when they tell or post of photo of how much clearance they have between the strut and the tire it's like 0.5"-1" lol.

Well, I ordered two 245/40/17 PS4S. I'll let you know what I find. I suspect that I'll need to get at least a 3mm spacer, but we'll see. They may end up on the rear if I can't make it work.

Yes I was planning on doing a square setup as this is for track driving only. As far as I can remember, BimmerWorld advised me to go for 225/45s w this 17x8.5ET40 setup or up to 235 on the same wheel. They said if a 245 tire is desired, their 17x9ET42 wheel should be a better setup. Unfortunately their forged setup is only available w 8.5ET40.

I figured if my only choice is a 225 or even a 235, I’ll try to look out for a much more square profile tire, or maybe one of those that run a lot wider than normal 225/235 tires just to get that “additional” contact patch.

Ok great let me know how the fit goes Thunderguts , although the tire I’m looking at are RS4s, not PS4s.

I really hope one of the wheel manufacturers might make a proper 17" wheel for the 1 series fitment, wide enough to fit 245 or maybe even 255, and still have a good offset.

Well, if there's any way at all to do it without camber plates, I should be able to find it. I've got -1.2° camber from M3 arms and pulled pins. My 17x8 wheels are the narrowest that will properly fit a 245 mm tire and my +45 mm offset is probably the bare minimum to keep me off the strut. To top it off, the PS4S tapers more than most tires at the tread to keep me from rubbing the fender. The only thing going against me is that I'm lowered slightly on T1 springs. I ordered some cheap 5 mm spacers to do a test fit because I suspect I'll need a thin spacer to give me strut clearance. If I can't find a way to make it work without rubbing, I don't think it can be done. Worst case scenario for me is that I run a 235 in front with a 245 in the rear. I lose the ability to rotate, but it should keep handling close to neutral.

Which setup? Also, maybe I should have mentioned square setup, sometimes it's useful, and don't really need more than 255 in the rear if using a good tire.

Check this out: https://support.apexraceparts.com/hc...-Fitment-Guide

Should cover everything you need to know fitment wise for the E82's.
