Did you see "M3 Adjuster"s review of the 1M// ? I think this might be "telling" from a BMW employee's perspective...

Since I don't own a 135... even though we looked under the hood.... I can't comment on size... It was clear from the employees that the N54 was considered superior to the N55, and it also costs more to build. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=458238 Dackel |

In the case of the 1M, I can see the twin turbo being "superior" in the sense that it was probably easier for the engineers to replicate a naturally aspirated feeling than with a single larger turbo. (Hence the rumors of an upcoming tri-turbo M3 engine)

Good point. Is the 1M also slated for a new engine too? There had been a lot of pre-press giving it the N54..... "Yesterday we got a close look at the new 1M. Yes most of it was covered. However we managed to not only get a glimpse of the color and design but also quite a few more details. Here are a few: *That is Valencia Metallic Orange (not Inka Orange). I am not a fan of metallic paint and especially metallic orange paint. Yet I have to say I love the look of this color both under the sun and at night. *The engine is N54 based (we’ll have more on this very soon) *The 1M will be manual transmission only – the costs were too high to engineer a DCT into such a limited run car *Yes those are M3 Competition package wheels *The front air intake is much like the M3’s but even more pronounced on this car (don’t ask how we know this) *The side skirts are also much like the M3’s in shape (again don’t how we know this!)

Given all the bad press as of late about the n54 I wouldn't be surprised if they did go a different route

He's stock. I later went on to read many people correct this qoute and that is far more agreeable. No man who claims to have knowledge of the 1 series should ever say the stock DCT N55 IS faster than a FBO N54 AT, or MT (even on my stock map I'll prove that wrong time and time again with a 6mt!) Feels faster sure why not. The DCT is amazing and is faster than cars with the same power in AT, even with a little extra weight from the DCT.
However it's all about feel for me and I like to drive with both hands and both feet. |
