At the same time 2 people stated that the window sticker for their 135i says their auto transmission is made in France and questioned if that means it is not the ZF (Getrag is known to build their trannys in France). The model number for the ZF steptronic in the 335i coupe is ZF6 TU19 and, I believe, made in Germany.

Did ZF suddenly start building transmissions in France?

How can one tell one for sure if he got the ZF transmission (or not...)?
I emailed ZF and this was their response:

Dear Mr.*****

thank you very much for your Email and your interest in ZF´s advanced driveline technology. The BMW 135i E82 (Cabriolet) and E88 (Coupé) are actually equipped with ZF´s 6-Speed automatic transmission 2nd generation. For the case of any further questions please don´t hesitate to contact me.

Again, here's a technical specifications document, showing ZF makes the 135 auto and manual (G).

In the 128, the manual is the Getrag I and the auto is the GM.

Giys,
I test drove the 135 with paddles and auto

The shifts are fast , say u are in 6th gear and U click the paddles thrice , the car directly shifts to 3 in an instant with a throttle blip
The DCT may be better but for the 135 , Auto with paddles is retty good

The steptronic in the 135i is awesome. I have driven it three times, and one of those times I drove it like a caffeinated circus monkey. The Tranny is the best auto I have ever driven. Having said that, I re-did my order a while back and went manual. I just think in the long run I will enjoy the power and torque by shifting, and since I plan to own and drive this car for 7+ years...it was the way to go. That, and thank the Lord I don't have to drive in freeway traffic anymore.

It never hurts to exercise your leg and arm muscles in a car.

the ZF STEP is great but who knows the longevity of it when BMW doesn't give any maintenance to it.

I emailed ZF to find out if the transmission in the 135i was the same as the 335i even though it was made in France. Jeff Diehl's (at ZF) response was that "ZF does not have any transmission manufacturing facilities in France."

He also said:
"If the 135i transmission is listed as made in France it is not a ZF transmission, most likely it is built & engineered by GM. BMW has used GM transmissions in the E36 line back in the 90’s, this was very common. ZF does not always have 100% coverage in the OEM markets."

Does anyone have a contact at BMW that clear this issue up? I was mainly curious to find out if it was the same as the 3 and Jeff's response does not gel with BMW's window sticker.

Is the 135i actually made in France? The window sticker claims that it is and ZF says it isn't. Read my post above yours.

That review is why I sent ZF an email. On my blog, the guy made the following comment:

"The sentence says that the 135i does not have an excellent ZF transmission. It is a logical fallacy to conclude that sentence means the 135i does not have a ZF transmission at all. In this case, it meant the 135i has a bad ZF automatic transmission.
In fact, if you look at the Monroney stickers for both the 135i automatic and 335i automatic, you can see that the countries of origin for the automatic transmissions are not the same. The 135i’s transmission is made in France. The transmission for the 335i is made in Germany" http://www.blog.uofmtiger.com/2008/0...-web/#comments

I have tried to prove him wrong, but I am getting nowhere with ZF. Although, every other article I have read says it is the same ZF transmission. My belief is that BMW's window sticker is wrong, but I have no proof.

LOL 'Hydramatic' is a term/name GM has been using for a certain line of its auto transmissions for decades

135i is most definitely fitted with the ZF unit...can't comment on Country of origin etc. but as far as I know, the N54 and auto trans combination are mated together with exactly the same hardware regardless of end car type application !

While we're at it (seeing how my totalled '08 135i has now morphed into a '13 135i) I've been looking for info on the gearbox and ran across this PDF - looks like lube is specific based on a plate located on the flywheel for those who have manual GS6-53BZ gearboxes:

http://www.thectsc.com/images/pdf/teml11.pdf

And, of course, the 2013 has a down rated (torque capacity) GS-45BZ : -(

The ZF site sez the S6-45 takes up to 470 NM of torque and the S6-53 up to 600 NM:

http://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/pr....shtml#tabs1-1

And one more link:

https://ci-portal.zf.com/global/medi...s/TE-ML_11.pdf

The 1M also has this same "down rated" manual trans(as do all N55 135i's)... even though the 1M puts out 500Nm. I think either BMW figues not too many trans will fail under warranty or they know that its ok. Maybe its just the bean counters taking over at BMW. BMW did say that one of the reasons for going with the N55 engine was it was cheaper to produce - besides being more economical on fuel than a N54.
