There have been a few piggys installed (SSTT and JB) with minimal issues. Helix also seems to have run into one of the new cars unknowingly, and made some minor changes that eliminated all problems.

I'd wait a month or two to make sure piggys are working fine.

It sounds like this change was more of a big "F You!" to Dinan, as it's rumored that there's some new high level encryption technology being used that will be VERY difficult for Dinan to crack. The earlier ECU they were able to crack through bribery for some security codes, but it seems the system in this new ECU is a bit more dynamic.

In short, I'd give it a month or two at most until there are work-arounds from most tuners. Could take a long time before Dinan cracks it. They'll most likely have to pay BIG bucks to someone high up in BMW AG to get the software needed to reflash the ECU.

Oh well, my order was placed 3/04/08. I was not keeping close track but that puts my build somewhere between March 18 and April 8. Wish I paid closer attention.
BMW will void the entire powertrain if they find out you have any tuning or have had tuning software. Be VERY careful you guys!

Looks like I won't be jumping on a tune right away. Although, most reviews have said that this car has plenty of power without a tune.

Man. I was really psyched about getting a tune done! I know Dinan says they will warranty your car for the 4/50 period. I guess I will hold off a bit, tho..

It sounds like a duel of Engineering Egos.

What's to prevent BMW from swapping out an updated ECU during the first warranty mandated service?

Southern California was noted as a particular problem area and Dinan was also mentioned as one of the tuners no longer in favor.

This can still be classified as informed speculation, but I am certainly taking it as a word to the wise.

That sucks, I was going to place my order sooner but am getting married in June so I just got around to placing my order last week. My dealer was pushing Dinan on me after I asked about it directly. They never once said it would void my warranty, in fact they invited me to track days and everything once I got my 135i and told me that I as long as I went Dinan either BMW or Dinan would take care of everything.

A little worried, but oh well I guess. :iono:

"Currently, Dinan software is applicable for vehicles equipped with the MSD v80.0 DME (engine management computer). Vehicles equipped with the MSD v81.0 DME are not yet supported. For the most part, the production date break appears to be 3/08, however this is not an absolute so it is best to check the DME label. "

NA can I ask where you found this on the Dinan site?

Thanks!

Only cost as far as I can tell, and even that may be worth it on cars they suspect have been tuned. Eating the cost of the new ECU is a hell of a lot cheaper than warrantying the engine later on and they could certainly do that I would think.

Lets hope it doesn't go that way.

But honesly, who can blame them. IF BMW really felt like this engine really could make 380Hp and be reliable enough to last 100k miles they would have probably cranked it up themselves. I personally have to believe running at those power levels puts certain things outside the design parameters they're following, and it's probably more than an upgraded oil cooler will correct.

That's not to say that I won't put a tune on my car though.

If Dinan software is no longer available without voiding the powertrain warranty I need to cancel my order..

Yea, if true I need to hold on to my current car.. the one I've been getting ready to sell before the 135i shows up. Hopefully, this warranty info is just more nasty internet rumors.

While many of you are disappointed, BMW's strategy is going according to plan.

BMW cuts ties with US tuner "Dinan" late last year.

BMW has not made claims of not coming out with ECU software. So there is a good possibility BMW will come out with some tuning after extensive research. And since it's BMW, 1) it will be a while and 2) numbers will claim low

BMW claims low and conservative numbers because they don't want to promise something that cannot deliver. For example, an E46 Performance Intake promises 3hp gain, when it gave an E46fanatic nearly 10hp on a before/after dyno test.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I'll keep my 2K in the bank 'till everything is sorted out. Plus it will give me some time to get to the 1200 mile break.

Was anyone buying the 135i strictly with the intention to mod it and now wanting to dump the car and move onto something that may be a bit more, ahem, tuner friendly?

Sort of here. I traded an STi, also 300 hp x 300 tq and one of the reasons I did was for the 384 hp x 421 tq with a mirror warranty, this bums me out for sure. And the STi had AWD, which is nice near Chicago like I am. Handling, stock-wise is near the same on paper.

So yeh, this does suck, I hope Dinan/BMW gets this sorted out soon.

If this doesn't get sorted out you may be seeing a 135i coupe with SGM/Blk/prm pkg/spt pkg on eBay come late May or early June. :iono:

I wouldn't go as far as dumping it, but I'm certainly dissapointed. I wanted something at least as fast as my current car (which runs 12.8 1/4 miles with its mild tune), and not being able to get there with a tune doesn't thrill me.

I'm hopeful this isn't going to be as much of an issue as it seems right now. Honestly, I'll take my chances with losing the warranty if that's what it's going to take to make the car fast. I think it's kind of shady to modify a car, then expect the manufacturer to cover you when you break something anyway. I just hope the tuners don't give up on it because of this.
