"Engine Malfunction-reduced power"

I dont know what it is, but thats what my idrive was flashing. the car would not go over 30 miles an hour. so i called BMW assist and they came to pick it up. when i started the car again the message was gone and the car was behaving normally. i sent it with the guy anyways and its on its way down to BMW of bridgeport. opinions? hypothesis? ballbreaking comments?

Sounds like you got a limp mode. If you don't have any mods, I have heard fuel pumps can do it (we blame everything on that damn pump:biggrin. Overheating was common when the 335 1st came out, but not since they added the oil cooler. have your starts for the car been long ?

When you tried to accelerate did the car shake/ride rough?

I am having similar issues. I have taken my car in 3 times now and still have not got this resolved. Let us know what yours ends up to be:w00t:

I will keep you posted on my status as well. I will be taking my car in for the fourth time tomorrow

99% sure it's a bad fuel pump...

....BMW tells their techs to avoid replcing em like the plague. Happened to me en route to the Outerbanks this summer. Glad I found a transparently helpful mechanic who let me in on the dark underworld of BMW NA.

I had the yellow engine light come on one time. I drove home with it on, then turned off the car. When I restarted it, the light was gone and hasn't come back.

That's funny, cause I swear that I read over at e90post that the addition of an oil cooler solved the limp-mode issues. They found that 335's without sport package were not fitted with an oilcooler from the factory, and they had the most probs with overheating and limp modes.

Uh yes it was, I heard from a friend who is an instructure for BMW that they had a few brand new 335i's go into limp mode at the BMW race school here when they first came out.

lots were doing it, just read the old e90 forum's postings about it

didnt they do a recall and add oil coolers to the early cars that were missing them?

If oil temp exceeds a threshold of 300F, the car will enter a power reduction mode to protect the engine internals and turbos. When oil temp drops, everything will return to normal. Not having an oil cooler will have no adverse effect on a vehicle that sees normal to "spirited" driving. On cars without a cooler, driving on a track for prolonged periods in steptronic mode at high engine speeds can cause the power reduction mode to come into play. Power reduction has nothing to do with the engine cooling system overheating. It also won't set fault codes, since it's a designed feature.

so you are saying there are two or more types of power reduction modes ? what was described in this thread and a lesser type? I would like to hear about the differents. could you give us a little more info ?

(FYI...Mad Dragon is a BMW tech)
