Well for me it was a spearco core. But that was with a 2 litre turbo Nissan, not a BMW.

Shop around for what you are comfortable with spending. People here love the ETS core, the VRSF 7" would be more than enough to keep you cool in the summer. But seriously, I wouldn't consider turning up the boost at all until I had a better FMIC.

Many people on this forum will tell you that an intercooler should not be your first mod, but I disagree. From my experience, any piece of supporting equipment that is going to help your engine work more safely and more efficiently should be in place before you start altering the power levels beyond what was intended from the factory.

Just make sure you actually bolt it into place after you install it or you'll run over it like I did to mine. Mike@x-ph is on this forum, he is a vendor and he is also in Las Vegas. He could probably give you some good info and some killer prices on mods.

Damn, ran it over huh? aint that a bitch.

I plan on getting everything done at once, it will cut down my install prices. Also, i dont have time to take it to shop 3-5 times getting stuff installed. BUt FMIC was def on my list. I cant seem to find the VRSF FMIC instock anywhere, so i might have to go a different route.

I've seen that several times, but havnt seen why to use those.
N55 mids don't have secondary cats on them like the n54 mids do. They both have the same resonator, so you are just removing two cats improving flow so yes you could see a slight power increase.
It would be extremely negligible. You can get a full n55 mid/axle back magnaflow system for $700 shipped from performance peddler so i dont see any point to ever spending the money on n55 mids. Yes, the n55 magnaflow fits the n54...i have it!

Bang for your buck to make a nicely rounded car:

Power:
JB4, downpipes and intakes

Suspension & brakes:
Reasonably priced coilovers (ST, KW v1, PSS9)
Subframe bushings
Upgrade pads

Maintenance:
Carbon cleaning, fluids, waterpump.

Should leave you a small amount of cash for misc little mods.

Jb4 + VRSF DP + ER FMIC ( you get free ER CP with it ) + BMS DCI + Exhaust (AA,VRSF,ETS,AFE)
This takes you to FBO + Exhaust for way under 3500$

FBO = Full Bolt On's. ie: everything one can possibly change on the engine to make more power.

Just want to throw in here for Simmons - Everything you can change on the engine - Without actually changing the engine internals themselves. On the N54/5 this roughly equates to intake, intercooler, downpipe(s), exhaust, some type of flash or computer to increase boost and timing, and if you need them - charge pipes.

After you get to FBO the next steps for power involve some more serious wrenching and some semi-serious compromises in some cases. Although technically turbos "bolt on" to their manifolds, they are considered an upgrade that is beyond the "bolt-on" category. Obviously a cam would be considered greater than bolt-on, as would a head flow, an increased bore or stroke, pistons, etc. If you know all this already just kick me.
