Tunes, mods and insurance
I'm just about to pull the trigger on a JB+ as I'm not going to get my hands on a 1M due to the recent arrival of our second child. What have UK 1addicts been doing with regards to informing their insurance companies of any mods or tunes?

Simple really. Not telling them is a) illegal and b) will invalidate your insurance. Maybe a risk you're prepared to take if you have a small knock, but have a big one, where perhaps either you or the car are not in a state to start removing stuff from the car, and you and potentially anyone else involved in the accident, could be in trouble one way or another.
Simply not worth the risk in my opinion. Insurance company will look for any excuse to not pay out, at which point any notional saving you've made won't seem so attractive
