I spoke too soon.....mine started rattling again today. I'll check the pads I put in-between the canvas and the bar to see if one fell out, in the meantime - anyone have any experience with aftermarket roof companies, this seems cheap to me - https://www.convertibletopguys.com/c...-E88;-1-Series

Good find, this seems legit and for the right price. If you go for it, let us know how it goes and fits.

Hey all,

Still a member of the rattling rear window club, and am trying to weigh options. A favor to ask:

1. If anyone knows of a reputable upholstery shop in the Southeast (Preferably NC/SC/GA/TN/VA) that is capable of doing a *repair* on the separating rear window, I'd be grateful for their contact information. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post publicly. Looking specifically for repair options, as there are shops here that are happy to replace the otherwise good condition OEM top with an aftermarket one for $2k+.

2. If anyone within ~100 miles of Charlotte NC has experience doing this repair and is willing to help, I'm happy to pay for your time and know-how. If it comes to taking this on myself I'm not going to back down from it, but I've battled Degenerative Disc Disease in my neck for the past decade, and have very limited strength in my right arm from Cervical Stenosis resulting from it. I have no doubt that taking on this repair by myself is going to be a handful...

Waiting on an updated quote from Hendrick BMW for an OEM replacement for shits and giggles LOL. I fully expect it to be in the 50-75% of the car's current private party value range. Should be, well, interesting. Will keep a garbage can nearby in case I need to hurl when I get the news. 🤣

Thanks everyone!

Might be worth a look. Mine rattles as well so I'm sure I'll be looking into this when it gets too annoying.

Sorry I cannot help with the rear window separation issue, I have not had that. My second replacement top is still working well. I retreated it last weekend.

The TSB is to stop a wear issue in the fabric of the top, to my knowledge it does nothing for the window attachment.

Thanks, 3 hours from me. Do you remember how long you had to leave it with them ?

I tried to get somebody to fix my rear window when it separated; nobody would go near it.
There was an aftermarket top with a 10 year guarantee that I could get installed for $3,200 AUD, which was the cheapest quote I could find;

I ended up removing the window altogether, cutting out a clear 3mm panel the same size with a band saw and installing that in the place of the old glass window.
Acrylic weighs a fraction of what the glass window did, so it glues into place easily and doesn't move.

The whole job ended up costing about $55AUD.

.. and since that TSB applies to Pre 2010 vehicles, I think it's safe to say we're all outside the BMW Limited Warranty period now anyway.

Aside from the lack of defroster....that you probably don't need :-)
How is the durability, scratch resistance, visibility etc.

I bought some 3M tape from EBay, I'll try that first but it's been raining constantly the last few days so it's going to have to wait.

It was not especially pretty, but it worked. It has held for almost 4 years now. One issue I had is that I did not get it as "Tight" as the factory one, so It still rattled. I solved this by placing a piece of (edge piece of the puzzle piece floor foam) foam inside the top, in between the window and convertible top at the bottom of the window. There is a little pocket that is between the glass and a metal bar that it fits right into.

I have noticed the internal pieces of the top getting frayed - looks like black garbage bag as it de-laminates...but really only seen when the windows are down and the top is up and it blows around a bit.

******UPDATE 5 years later I am doing the job again... Lasted just short of 5 years. Not too bad for $30 repair. This time I am using the suction cup clamps to hold it in place.
How was the process again 5 years later? Was it easy to remove the old 3m from the soft top material?

I did it 6 months ago with suction clamps and heavy pressure for 48+ hours. Most of it is holding well but there is slight separation around the bottom middle. I'm not sure if I should clean it out / re-glue just that area or just suck it up and put on a new top. Pretty disappointed about it starting to separate (hard to see in photos but it is).

Yeah- it has not lasted as long now...either I did not prime it right near the bottom or clamp it well enough it is leaking again. I was able to stretch the usefulness of the top an extra 5 years at least...I now just ordered a new one from ebay for $925 shipped. It should be showing up soon and it should be fun figuring out how to put the new one on.

That's still an amazing life. Most people report getting an extra couple years. 5 is impressive. Good luck with the new top!

What did you use to clean up the old sealant when you redid it? I'm about to go for round 2 this month so curious how to clean / address the pockets that didn't adhere well before I reapply everything.

I used the 3M fix with the suction cups, looks like shit but it has held for a couple of years now. Can you try to document putting the new one on, especially the "less than obvious" parts to it ? I've looked all over and there is no how to, no video, no instructions anywhere as to how to put a new cover on.

Just finished putting on the new top - took my time and referenced this youtube video: https://youtu.be/gfqeGhuQXfs

Not too bad if you take your time - about 6 hours total. Special tools are T30 and T20 bits, rivet gun and rivets, and some spray adhesive.

Only snag so far is one of the riveted straps was too short? and now has snapped. Have to look at it, but still leak free after a auto carwash yesterday.

So nothing crazy, just pay attention when you take the old one off and put the new one on the same way, right ?
Ha, that video is fairly new (Apr 2021) - it wasn't there when I was looking a year or so ago - good find :-)

Has this happened to anyone with a beige top? Only reason I ask cause it hasn't happened to me luckily and I am thinking the black top retains more heat due to the color which will pull apart the glue faster over time. Just a theory I have
