Shredded serpentine belt
So while driving to work today, my serpentine belt shredded. I was five minutes from work and coasted the rest of the way. I put in a new tensioner pulley and put on a new belt and the car then shredded the new belt. Everything was aligned. One thing that wasn't making sense while I was putting the new idler pulley on was that the top pulley was not grooves when it should be. Can anyone confirm if this part is suppose to be grooved?

It should be smooth. Mine was shredded once and the shop I took it to had a difficult time trying to figure out the same thing but that's the way it is

I have my fan out and am checking all my pulleys to make sure no belt reminants was lodged in between them. I'm spinning the ac compressor pulley and it is taking some force to spin it. I wouldn't say a lot of force but should it turn as freely as the rest of the pulleys or should I take out the ac compressor unit.

Also what are reasons why my belt would have shredded. I have done lots of research and can't figure it out. No contact with the subframe. No weird sounds. Not sure what to look for

Have you inspected all the pulleys for damage? If something got caught between the belt and any of the pulleys it could have damaged the pulley and left a sharp edge.

Yes but there was one thing that caught my attention. I was circling my finger around the crank shaft and found a sharp metal edge on the bottom passenger side of the pulley. (Sharp metal edge is not on the pulley, it is coming from something else) Can't get a clear picture with my phone so I'm not sure if it is part of something or not. But the belt was literally shredded perfectly even. Is it possible that the belt jumped and just kept getting shredded? Also, I put a new tensioner on a week before this all happened. Is it possible that the new tensioner was the old recalled tensioner and that is why the belt jumped and shredded?

Well I checked all pulleys and belts and replaced the tensioner thinking I may of had a bad one. Everything was fine but my car decided to shred another belt today. Could really use some help here. I can't figure out why the hell the belt is getting shredded. Pulleys have all been replaced... It runs fine for about a week then shreds the belt. Not sure what is going on here.

If the ac pulley was seized, would that make the belt shred though? I'll take a look at it tomorrow because it is my day off. And why would it take an entire week to make the belt shred

I'm going to record me spinning it before doing anything. That way you can give me your opinion if it needs replaced. Also, what would I replace if it is the ac compressor. The whole unit or just the bearing?

Depends if you can get the bearing off the snout of the compressor. You will probably need the complete A/C clutch, which should come with a new bearing. You will need feeler gauges to set the clearance on the new clutch.

I'm a rookie when it comes to the ac system. So just looking and reading about parts. I would need a new ac clutch? I do not need an entire ac compressor that is 560 dollars on ecstuning.
Thanks for your help by the way Last edited by tglazed; 12-08-2014 at 06:43 PM.. |

Some guys have had a shredded belt issues - do to launching the car from a start HARD or when making power shifts(hard 1st to 2nd). The motor mounts allow the engine to move enough that the front crankshaft pulley will contact the front core support. Do that enough times and your belt will pay the price. I remember a few guys who had to replace the front crank pulley bc of this. And it wasn't a cheap repair from what I remember. That harmonic pulley was bucko's.
It could also be one of your tensioner pulleys. One of the ball bearings could be damaged, and when it gets caught JUST right inside the tensioner's race, it locks up and causes the belt to be damaged. Dack

I checked the powersteering pulley and crank pulley to see if any of those had happened. No marks or anything and both pulleys are in perfect working order. No chips or anything. I've replqced the tensioner pulley twice and the idler pulleys twice so those are out. I'm going to look into the ac compressor unit. And making sure the pulleys are all perfectly aligned

Videos aren't working but Ill keep trying today. A bit frustrated. The a/c compressor seems to be fine. Everything is aligned and runs great and then a week later it shreds the belt. I am 100 % lost on what would be causing the belt to shred. There are no belt burn marks anywhere. No slivers, the belt is being routed the proper way. Anyone know the correct torque for the alternator bolts. I made sure that it was aligned and am not sure what torque to put the bolts back at.
