Proper cooling ducting to the brakes, pad material and overall system capacity means a lot more than piston count. Simply look at the track forums to see multiple examples of the poor quality of the 135i brakes, or look at other forums to see how poorly Brembo calipers on 370z's, Evo's and STi's fare under track usage.
I've driven Brembo mult-piston brakes on the racetrack for years. They are superb. I said the rotors are too small on the 135i and that is their only deficit (larger rotors sink the heat away from the calipers, pads, and brake lines - 135i rotors are way too small for such a heavy & fast car). There is a reason that all Porsches and Ferraris have come with multi-piston Brembo brakes for decades (and a reason that BMW M owners who track seriously are required to make brake upgrades).

For comparison - My Brembo brakes on my Porsche are 304mm x 32mm front and 309mm x 28mm rear and the car weighs 1,900 pounds. Now compare the weight of the 135i and its rotors' sizes (and pay particular attention to rotor width which speaks to amount of iron to act as heat sink).

135i calipers with M3 rotors (or bigger) would be a big improvement over either car's current brakes.

There seems to be a lot of space between the front wheel and the fender. Looks like it could use a bit of a drop. Other than that, I'm very curious to see what the rest of the car looks like, especially the engine spec's. I hope this doesn't drag on for weeks, I can only read so many comments about a front fender. BMW please don't torture us!

We had a strict private BMW US preview the other week. Before the tragedy of Mr Pitney and before the car was taken to Wisconsin.

Anyway You will love it... Jack did. R.I.P.
My condolences to friends and family of Mr. Pitney who looks to have been a great man and certainly bound for many more great accomplishments. It was definately too soon. It's sad to see such tragedy in the same breath as such great news. A bittersweet time for BMW NA for sure. R.I.P.

The 1er looks astounding. I am with the rest of the guys that say they hope it performs well enough to justify switching from a modded 135i.
So far the asthetics don't seem to be lacking.

And is it just me or is that not carbon fiber on the little bit of the rear diffuser?

The 245 wide front tires alone should make it worth it. Then add the stiffer M suspension bushings and calibration.. the handling difference should be night and day.

I'm guessing the base price will be low 40k's. Loaded like I would want; mid $50k's.

Low 40's is a pipe dream. A base 135i is 37k. We're looking at a solid 5 digit premium here($10,000).

That could possibly be the case. Here is my opinion: I dont understand why people would buy such a car and tick off every single option. Things that dont add to the performance but do add weight. Why not just buy a 128i/135i and do that? This will be super focused(hopefully) and I would'nt want to do anything to negate that. At the most I'd fetch for one of these sweet paint jobs.

When a sporty car starts off at X, it will cost X plus a minimal amount of money for me. Not because I can't afford it but I dont need 20 speakers, or the extra leather package. This M will come with enough things standard to keep me happy(M seats, LSD, power, xenons, carbon fiber roof, etc.) I mean, really. I could understand those that want to choose their own specific transmission of choice.

M Boss said it would be more tangible, not cheap. 47-48k instead of 58k is definitely more tangible. 60k for a car is a lot for most people. I can almost guarantee pricing will start with the number 4. If not, BMW will have to be giving these away. People aren't that stupid.

True, but stuff like M-drive isnt standard..i think that is something worth springing for. This car would be my daily driver, so i need navi (if anything..for the traffic alerts) and a good stereo would be nice. I dont have the time or patience to look for an aftermarket sound system and have it installed, etc. I dont have the luxury of having two cars, at least for now. I wanted an M3, but the price of admission is way too much. Why not go for the 1M loaded up at least somewhat. Give me DCT, M-drive, Navi, Logic 7 sound...and a Convienence Package like whats on the 2011 3 series..and im set.

Answer, because some people can and will. Its called exclusivity. People will pay for it. The things that will add the most weight will be the DCT, 19" wheels/tires, etc, the performance enhancing options.

It looks like the rear view mirrors are M3 style.

I agree with the poster above. I don't understand why the people purchasing the 1M want to add on all of these options that will only add more weight to the car. If you wanted a daily driver with all the comfort and amenities, then this car is not for you. Try something else like the 135i with a mod-chip and other enhancements. You can then go and add the navigation, dual-clutch transmission, 20 speakers, leather everything, sun-roof, full powered seats, etc. All of those options and amenities will add more than 200-300 additional pounds to the car. But it will be the daily driver car that you've been craving for. Not the 1M.

my options are something in the 3 series (either a 335i or a 335is) or the 1 series (preferrably the 1M). I love the 335is, but at 60k...61k MSRP with all the options that i want (Navi, Logic 7, ZCW), its really pushing it for a standard 3 series. I dont want to settle for a 328i or a 128i..if thats the case, i'd rather go get an Infiniti G37 for the same price...

Hell my local dealer had a 335is on the lot with no navi for 60k...thats rediculous. I think BMW's pricing structure has gotten out of control in recent years (at least the sticker prices). Im just trying to figure out how to get into the M world (or the BMW hi-po world) the most economical way possible. I think everyone is concerned about their wallets these days .
