surprised by performance exhaust

I just installed the BMW performance exhaust less than a week ago and was both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised.

First the good: There is a lot of burbling and popping on deceleration, much more than I expected from a factory exhaust. This is music to my ears! Also, the exhaust sounds glorious at high rpms and I no longer have to turn down the fan to hear the engine.

Now for the bad. The exhaust is quite loud and drony under even gentle acceleration at anywhere from 2000 to 3000rpm. I was not expecting this at all based on reviews of the exhaust I've read. It sounds like I'm giving it all I've got when I take off from a light stuck behind a slow moving truck.

I've put about 150mi on it and it has improved slightly. It was absolutely deafening at some points during normal driving the first day I had it on.

This drone does not sound like other users descriptions of the exhaust. Does the low rpm mellow out as it breaks in further? Any suggestions??

i have no idea what you are talking about because my performance exhaust is way more quiet than I thought it would be. IMO its not deafening in the slightest. Sorry I can't really help you out though. Hopefully it mellows out even more as you break it in.

I saw in another thread that some 128s had a rubber vibration damper attached to the muffler. My car didn't have one but the performance exhaust has a place for it.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

could be that. To be honest, my magna flow exhaust is pretty loud too at 2k rpm. I like it, but I will check for you tomorrow to see if I have that piece or not.

It is possible that it is loud because of the damper. I know I have it on my Z4's stock exhaust. And also I know exactly what you are talking about between 2000 and 3000 RPM. Even though I have the damper, at slight acceleration the muffler is quite noisy between 2000 and 3000 RPM, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad (depending on how stressful was my day). I am planning on getting a SS muffler and I hope the drone in that range is not going to be lauder than the stock.

I added the rubber vibration absorber several weeks after the fact and I think it helped. Also, the exhaust mellows a bit with time.

My 128i now has 2700 miles on it (put the exhaust on the day we brought it home) and it's definiely mellowed. At first I wondered if I'd gone too far, but it sounds great now.

My stock muffler did not have the damper, so maybe that was for an earlier model year.

It will mellow out over time. I have 3k on the muffler and it is fine cruising @70.

Whew! I'm glad to hear it mellows over time. I'd hate to have it so loud when I'm crawling away from a light next to a cop!

I guess I'll hold off on the damper and see how the sound changes over the next couple weeks.

Cops won't bother you - after all, it's a BMW part and you actually have a muffler, unlike some of the Harleys and Hondas running around. I have also found that the further you put your foot into the throttle, the louder it is - which is by design.

It only takes a few weeks for it to start mellowing. I actually liked it when first installed better But it still sounds mean.

I almost sold mine two weeks after install because of the drone. Took more than 4 weeks to break in and now it's fine. I love it 90% of the time. Still some drone when applying throttle from low rpm.

Now that it has been a couple weeks, the exhaust sounds perfect with the windows down!
Still sounds annoying sometimes with the windows up, but definitely improving.
