Replacing mid-pipes and keeping stock exhaust

Has anyone just replaced the midpipes and kept the stock exhaust?

Were there any gains? Sound improvment?

Did you keep the cats?

Here's a thread where the OP put on the CP-E midpipes with the stock muffler:

I'm actually considering a similar route. You would probably have to have a muffler shop reinstall the stock cats or a pair of high flow cats though.
