Would you or wouldn't you
have the dealer change out the dash due to air bag showing.
I'm debating, as I have 3 months of warranty left and a slight defect of the passenger side airbag showing through. My only hold back is having the entire dash removed (also have nav), and then having a new dash put in with rattles or scratches etc. The lines are not too bad now, but a few years down the road I don't want to have serious issues. Any advice?

Doesn't matter if you would or wouldn't... BMW won't:

I wouldn't do it. Because the chances of having more squeaks and rattles is far greater than a small imperfection in the dashbaord. And yea... I thought BMW stopped replacing dashbaords for this. Its fairly normal for our 1er's.

^king,
Thanks for the bmw info, but at my last dealer visit, i brought the issue up to my SA and he said they would replace, but gave me pretty good reasons to "not" have it done....the reasons i have mentioned above. Kinda like opening up another can of worms. Guess i'll just live with it. Its a shame, as the rest of the interior looks brand new.

Yeah, if you don't have any major rattles now, be happy and enjoy it. It's not worth it IMO.

Yeah it kinda sucks, but the car is too damn good to let this get to me too much.
Do the newer 1ers (2010-2012) have the same hard plastic dash or have they gone to softer materials? I love the interior, buti wish they would have used a softer material on the dash.

My 2010 has a very faint outline. It's a lease that goes back in Sept so I'm not terribly worried.

I didn't have it fixed. If that's the kind of quality BMW wants to project, then who am I to get in the way. Plus it's just cosmetic, the car and the airbag still work fine.

My 2012 model doesn't have any issue. Interior is perfect. Then again, I've only had it a few weeks so if this is something that evolves over time then only time will tell. My dash materials do not seem like hard plastic to me, but I don't know what previous models are like to compare and say whether this is something that has changed or not. I'm very happy my my dash and interior quality. So far.

Take a pic and let us see, sometimes if part of it shows it does look awkward. However if it all shows like a nice rectangular shape it sort of looks normal.

Wonderful news, but better forewarned than not. I plan to get the windshield treated with a clear tint that is supposed to cut UV and heat transmission by 50% so maybe that will help while driving. The rest of the time it will be garaged or have a custom fit sun blocker under the windshield when parked anywhere other than at my condo or office. Time doth ravage all things, so maybe I'm just forestalling the inevitable, but, as Dylan Thomas advised, I will not "go gentle into that good night".
