That 1er grill looks better and better

https://www.carscoops.com/2021/02/bm...eryone-thinks/

I have been fascinated with how BMW is willing to leave money on the table with those cars with the "China" grills, like the 2021 M3 and M4.

I suspect low mileage used BMWs will rise even more as people hunt down the back catalogue. I think Chris Bangle's stock is rising.

Curious what the 1er family thinks of that look.

Would it have been that bad to just have a different bumper/grille for China?

The market for BMW in China is booming as things slow in other markets. Their design language caters less to Europe and the US now and going forward I think.

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/27/...boss-explains/

This was one of the stories that tipped off the changes in target markets.

"...customers are very, very different in China, the U.S., the Middle East and in Europe," said van Hooydonk. In other words, it's a real challenge to please clients globally — making a car that will stand out in China, for example, but that will not alienate European customers who traditionally have more reserved tastes."

The financial pressures of one car for most markets has slowed the region specific variations I suspect. I am not sure BMW ever had east Asian specific designs. US companies had specific models for lots of regions. Europe sure gets lots of BMW models that we don't.

I like the design, but I like weird things (I like the i3 for example). I don't really care if they're making it for the Chinese market, they appealed to the US market for long enough, it's time for some change.

Ever seen a long-wheel-base 3-series sedan? Built in and for the Chinese market? Same for the 5-series.

I'll just do what I did - buy a 10yo 1-series.

I hate how Audis drive, and I have as much use for AWD as for a couple of ex-wives. No sticks in less than an M make BMW dead to me regardless.

The BMW upper crust in China likes to be driven around with a chauffeur. So they love the stretch cars.

Yeah, BMW has got to chase the money. We are lucky they spoiled the US market for so long. I like the i3 too, but I can't take the tall grills.

He's not actually. China is becoming the biggest automobile market, if they aren't already. Thats why BMW has so many economy style cars now. Most of which aren't available here in the US.

I wonder if sales have noticeable dropped here in USAc because of new design.

I had no plans to sell my 1er so I am glad BMW doesn't have anything to tempt me with.

When BMW publishes sales figures for February you'll have to remember that there is no 2021 4-series Grand Coupe yet which probably made up most of the 4-series sales for the past several years. Or convertible, for that matter. The coupe, whether it is a 2-series, old 3-series, or 4-series, was always a marginal niche item accounting for a tiny fraction of total BMW sales in the USA. I'm saying it might be too early to tell. I can tell you we've sold . . . one! But that's about right for any coupe.
